Joint inspections of local area SEND provision

In May 2016, the two inspectorates, Ofsted and the Care Quality Commission (CQC), started a new type of joint inspection: Joint inspections of local area Special Educational Needs and / or Disabilities provision.

The aim of these inspections is to hold local areas to account and champion the rights of children and young people.

Under the local area special educational needs or disabilities (or both) inspection framework, inspectors review how local areas meet their responsibilities to children and young people (from birth to age 25) who have special educational needs or disabilities (or both).

The information document (that can be downloaded on this page) has been produced for local area providers, staff, children and young people, parents and carers. This includes:

  1. Background information
  2. How will services and users be told about an inspection?
  3. The inspection process
  4. What do inspectors look for?
  5. What can’t inspectors do?
  6. Further information - contact details
