What is a Short Break?
A Short Break enables children and young people with disabilities and/or additional needs to join in with safe, fun and interesting activities while at the same time giving parents/carers an opportunity to have a short break from caring.
There are a range of leisure and recreation opportunities taking place around Hampshire including specialist and mainstream schemes. You can search for leisure and play activities in your area here.
KIDS are a national charity, providing a wide range of support services to disabled children, young people and their families. They support children with any disability from birth to 25 years of age and offer support to the whole family with the aim of giving disabled children a brighter future.
KIDS has been part of a Short Breaks partnership group working together with the Council for Disabled Children, Action for Children and Contact a Family.
KIDS' role was to work with children and young people to produce a film promoting short breaks, making it accessible to other children and young people with disabilities.
To start the process, they asked the young people they work with what they wanted in the film. They wanted it to be lively, colourful and exciting. The young people really loved being involved in this project and had fun making the film. They enjoyed being part of the Young People Engagement Groups (YPEG) and said "We are working together to make the future better" ,
"Since making the film, I've had more confidence to talk in front of other people" and "Being in the film was a great experience for me".
