An Introduction to Wheelchair Services

Who are they for?

Wheelchair services are available to people of all ages who have a long-term need for mobility help. However, the specific criteria for whether you're eligible are decided locally and will vary depending on where you live.

How can i get a wheelchair?

Before you can be offered a wheelchair, you’ll have to undergo an assessment. This will determine if you're eligible and, if so, what type of mobility equipment is most appropriate.

The assessment is normally carried out at NHS wheelchair services centres or clinics.

You will need a referral from your GP or your child’s physiotherapist or occupational therapist.

How do i find out more information?

Further information is available from NHS wheelchair services.

Both wheelchairs and buggies are supplied by wheelchair services. Sometimes they will offer you a voucher which you can use towards purchasing the wheelchair or buggy of your choice.

Wheelchairs on short term loan

If you need a wheelchair on a short term loan, you may be able to borrow one from the British Red Cross (see the "need to hire a wheelchair" link on the right. These are usually for a loan period of up to six weeks. You will need a letter from your GP.
