Family Information and Services Hub

There are several charities within Hampshire that offer Advocacy.

What is Advocacy?

Advocacy is helping people to speak up and have their views and wishes heard. It helps people access their rights as members of the community. The services are free and anyone can ask for an advocate
Advocates will:

• Listen to the person.
• Support the person to speak up.
• Support the person to make their own choices and decisions.
• Support them to access their rights as a member of the local community.

Advocacy is about helping the person to speak up for themselves as much as possible.

Some advocates provide independent advocacy for people (aged 16 and over) with a learning disability. Others work with the elderly, carers or those with mental health issues. This can be 1:1 issue-based advocacy, self advocacy groups and will be centred on that person's needs.
