How will early years setting/school/college staff support my child/young person?

Your key person will work closely with you and your child to ensure that you child is supported in their development and learning. Your key person will ensure that there is a consistent approach to your child's education and development. If necessary your key person will initiate an Individual Education Plan with support from our SENCO, working closely with your child either on a 1-1 basis or in small groups depending on your child's individual needs. We will undertake any necessary training in order to support children who have SEND.

How will the curriculum be matched to my child's/young person's needs?

All children are treated as individuals and encouraged to progress at their own speed. Upon entry to nursery each child will be observed and this will be used to determine your child's interests and their development. These observations allows us to introduce materials and relevant support to plan exercises and activities at a level to suit. Each child is encouraged to participate and practise new skills in order to master them.

How will both you and I know how my child/young person is doing and how will you help me to support my child's/young person's learning?

All children have profiles giving details of their progress and development, photographs and observations are used to record their learning journey. Parents are encouraged to look at their profiles with their children. Parents are also encouraged to contribute to their child's progress through our learning tree which links in with each individual profile.

What support will there be for my child's/young person's overall well being?

The safety and welfare of your children is of paramount importance to our setting. Our polices are reviewed regularly and risk assessments are carried out on a daily basis. Your key person will discuss and implement any specific risks associated with your individual child and their needs and / or disabilities.

What specialist services and expertise are avaliable at or accessed by the setting/school/college?

Our SENCO has experience working with children with a wide range of needs and disabilities. We have worked with and are happy to continue working with educational psychologists, physiotherapists, occupational therapists and portage in order to support children in our nursery and are able to access other specialist services if the need arises.

What training have the staff supporting children and young people with SEND had? Are any being trained currently?

Our SENCO attends support meetings and regularly attends training to update and review our practise.

How will my child/young person be included in activities outside this classroom including school trips?

>We modify our activities to suit the different needs and abilities of all our children so that they are able to participate. We endeavour to include all the children on our outings in the local community, parental consent will be required for children to access the outings and a risk assessment is carried out ensure everyone's health and safety. If a particular activity is deemed unsafe for a child or consent is not given then activities will be provided within the nursery.

How accessible is the setting/school/college enviroment?

Our nursery is based in a single storey village hall with access via a large car-park. There is a slight lip to negotiate at the main doorway and fire exits with one class room having a small step down into the garden but this does not preclude wheelchairs as access is granted through the adjoining classroom. The garden is set on one level and there is a paved path running throughout. There is one disabled bathroom which can accommodate a wheelchair and room to change. We are able to access equipment via the Occupational Therapy team where it is appropriate.

How will the setting/school/college prepare and support my child/young person to join the setting/school/college or the next stage of education and life?

New children are invited to 'settling in sessions' where discussions about your child's needs and requirements are held with yourselves and any professionals already involved with your child. Information where available is sought from prior settings. For children with English as an additional language, we ask for a list of key words that are displayed around the nursery in the home language. Activities are used to prepare children for school and we invite your child's new teachers to visit us at nursery to see them, chat and share in their learning. We attend meetings with teachers and professionals to help children with SEND prepare for a new school and with parents permission pass on any relevant information.

How are the setting's/school's/college's resources allocated and matched to children's/young people's special educational needs?

We are able to access funding for children with SEND providing certain criteria are met. Funding is allocated depending on an individuals needs. It is used towards 1-1 support, additional time and for any specific training that staff may need to undertake.

How is the decision made about what type and how much support my child/young person will receive?

Decisions about the type and amount of support needed for an individual child are reached through discussion with parents and any professional already involved with your child's care. This is monitored and reviewed continually to ensure the appropriate level of support is being received. You will be included in all reviews and discussions.

How are parents involved in the setting/school/college? How can I be involved?

We talk to parents at drop off and pick up times and encourage them to tell us about significant events in their child's life, any information relevant to their wellbeing will be recorded in our meet and greet book. Parents with special interests and / or skills are invited to come and share them with us. We also encourage parents to attend our end of term 'Wacky Races' and Christmas shows.
