How does the setting/school/college know if children/young people need extra help and what should I do if I think my child/young person may have special educational needs?

We are an inclusive setting offering children the opportunity to learn through play with skilled and experienced staff who recognise children’s individual stage of development. We accept the diverse needs of children, their different interests, ways of communicating, interacting and playing, whilst offering acceptance and support for both the children and their families. The Aviary nursery staff are experienced and knowledgeable about child development and would be able to identify and provide extra help for a child with SEND. We work in partnership with parents and carers and believe they know their children best. If you are concerned about your child’s development, then a conversation with your child’s key carer when they are in nursery or with the nursery manager before they start, will identify the correct route to an Aviary Nursery place.

How will early years setting/school/college staff support my child/young person?

We believe each child is unique and support their development through planned play and experiences both indoors and outdoors. These will be linked to stages of development, child’s individual needs and likes and interests.

How will the curriculum be matched to my child's/young person's needs?

Individual Education/Learning Plans (IE/LP) provide a guide to each child’s from of communication, things that help and things they do not like. This provides information for all staff working and playing with the child and supports settling in and ongoing development. They are reviewed monthly but not always changed.

How will both you and I know how my child/young person is doing and how will you help me to support my child's/young person's learning?

The nursery has a holistic view to the welfare of all children and the key carer approach supports their basic need for security and comfort. Each child has a key carer who observes their play, takes photographs of them and writes a learning journey of their time at nursery. There is space on the observations for you to let us know what they are doing at home, so that we can expand on their current interests and development stage. They assess a child’s stage of development and monitor progress. These are shared with you each term.

What support will there be for my child's/young person's overall well being?

The nursery environment and staff attitudes to inclusion promote individual learning and development. We recognise the uniqueness of each child and aim to offer a curriculum based on their stage of development and interests.

What specialist services and expertise are avaliable at or accessed by the setting/school/college?

The inside space is mainly flat and accessible to most children. The furniture is child height with different heights and styles of chairs. The toilets are child height and each toilet area has a height adjustable changing bed. The outside area has a sunk in sand pit and trampoline, swings with five-point harness, as well as a large grassed area and a Forest school area.

Reports from other agencies are read and shared amongst the staff team to enable a multi-agency approach to the child’s development. We welcome information from other agencies to support the child and their family and recognise that parents are their child’s first and most important educators.

What training have the staff supporting children and young people with SEND had? Are any being trained currently?

Most staff are trained to level three and above in child care and education. They are familiar with and use Makaton, Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS) and adapt at tuning into other subtler types of communication through careful observations and getting to know the child. A valuing Performance programme identifies individual staff training needs as well as needs for training being identified as a result of new initiatives, research and individual child needs.

How will my child/young person be included in activities outside this classroom including school trips?

N/A

How accessible is the setting/school/college enviroment?

The inside space is mainly flat and accessible to most children. The furniture is child height with different heights and styles of chairs. The toilets are child height and each toilet area have a height adjustable changing bed. The outside area a sunk in sand pit and trampoline, swings with five-point harness, as well as a large grassed area and a Forest school area.

How will the setting/school/college prepare and support my child/young person to join the setting/school/college or the next stage of education and life?

The Aviary Nursery is the SEND hub for the Eastleigh Borough. As such up to twenty, three and four-year-old children (ten in the morning and ten in the afternoon) may be offered a place here by the Local Authority for sessional care of fifteen hours each week during term time.

Children are referred to the Local Education Authorities SEND panel meetings by other professionals who are already involved with their care and development. This includes, Health Visitors, Paediatricians, Portage, Speech and Language therapist or Parents. The referral must be accompanied by reports that show the child’s educational need.

Education, Health and Care Plans (EHCP) are requested in the autumn term before a child starts school if this is necessary to enable the child’s individual, unique needs to be met at either a mainstream or special school. The Local Authority's SEND department makes these decisions.

Educational Psychologists will be involved with the EHCP process and may also facilitate a Child Centred Planning meeting for you and your child at some point during their time at nursery. These are also used for transitions to school.

How are the setting's/school's/college's resources allocated and matched to children's/young people's special educational needs?

All children receive the support they need at the times they need it. Each child has individual needs met by a team of caring, knowledgeable and experienced staff.

How is the decision made about what type and how much support my child/young person will receive?

Parents and staff identify the needs of the child and the type of things that will benefit the child’s development. Individual Education/Learning Plans (IE/LP) provide a guide to each child’s from of communication, things that help and things they do not like. This provides information for all staff working and playing with the child and supports settling in and ongoing development. They are reviewed monthly but not always changed.

How are parents involved in the setting/school/college? How can I be involved?

Parents know their child best. We value each home visit before a child starts, to get to know the family and arrange the correct settling in plan to make the transition from home to nursery as smooth as possible.
