Description

At Basingstoke Copper Beeches Day Nursery and Pre-School, we believe that equal opportunities for all children is fundamental to ensure all children can thrive and reach their full potential. We pride ourselves in being an inclusive nursery, educating all staff, children and parents about our inclusive practice. We have excellent parent partnership and we strive to meet and consult with parents on a regular basis, to ensure each individual child and their parents feel supported. By doing this, we can ensure the children thrive in our care and can support each child’s learning on an individual basis.

Our nursery will assess each child on an individual basis

How does the setting/school/college know if children/young people need extra help and what should I do if I think my child/young person may have special educational needs?

We have an open-door policy at Basingstoke Day Nursery and Preschool. The child’s key person is the best person to speak to as this is the person with the strongest attachment and relationship with the child. They are responsible for observing, evaluating and planning for the individual needs of their children. The key person also ensures they are building positive relationships with the child’s family and encouraging them to participate in their learning. It is important that each family feels completely comfortable and have formed relationships with all staff members.

Parents are welcome to speak to the nursery manager, deputy manager and/or senco about any concerns they may have about their child.

If a child joins our nursery and already has an identified SEND (Special Educational Need or Disability), we will work with the professionals involved who are already supporting the child. We will use the information we have gathered to implement a Child Support Plan so we are able to support the child to the best of our ability.

A parent may express a concern that their child has a SEND requirement or staff may express a concern that a child may have a SEND requirement that they may need some support with. We will arrange a meeting with the parents and discuss whether the child’s behaviour, learning and understanding is the same both at home and at nursery. We ensure we keep the parents informed and updated at each stage of the graduated approach. We will put some targets in place which will be revised with the parents. It may be necessary to bring in an outside agency to nursery to support the child; however, if we feel this is appropriate, we would have a meeting with the parents to discuss this and get the relevant permissions.

How will early years setting/school/college staff support my child/young person?

We operate an open-door policy, meaning that parents are welcome to talk to the Nursery Manager, Deputy Manager, the SEND team and their child’s key person. This can be done in a variety of different ways; in person, via telephone, or by email. Parents are welcomed in to look through their child’s Learning Journey, which tracks their progress and celebrates their progress and development at nursery. We encourage this as often as possible but always every six weeks.

How will the curriculum be matched to my child's/young person's needs?

All staff at Basingstoke Day Nursery and Pre-School are trained so that all activities can be differentiated, meaning they can be made more or less challenging so that each child is able to join in and learn at their own pace. Support will always be given wherever needed and age appropriate challenges will be provided.

Additional resources can be purchased wherever possible to enhance the child’s learning and support their development.

Our Bright Beginnings curriculum offers a holistic approach to learning and development as well as encourages children to be enthusiastic motivated learners. Our Bright Beginnings curriculum has 5 areas of learning: feelings and friendships, sharing thoughts and ideas, technical life skills, thinking creatively and exploring and learnings about the world which is interlinked with the EYFS. Our flexible approach to learning and development means that we ensure our children are prepared for the

next stage in their life, ensuring a smooth transition to their next room in nursery, or starting school.

How will both you and I know how my child/young person is doing and how will you help me to support my child's/young person's learning?

We hold six weekly assessment review meetings, where parents are highly encouraged to meet with their child’s key person to discuss how their child is getting on at nursery and to keep them updated about their child’s progress. We also hold two parent’s evenings a year. The child’s key person will complete a Two-Year Check when their child turns two. In addition, we will write a transition report for a new setting, if they leave our setting. We will also complete a communication with another setting form if a child attends another childcare setting alongside ours.

What support will there be for my child's/young person's overall well being?

The key person policy at our nursery is fundamental in ensuring each child feels safe, secure and happy in the nursery environment. Although the key person is the one who will be observing, planning and assessing a child’s learning and development, they will also encourage their key child to form positive relationships with all of the other staff members.

We offer three initial settling-in sessions when a child first starts at our nursery. The first is where the parents and their child come to the setting and meet their child’s key person and the team in the room. It is a chance for the key person to find out all about the child, including who is important to them, what they like doing, their routine, and any other important information which may assist us in helping the settling in process to go as smoothly as possible. The second and third settling in sessions are for the children and parents to continue to build relationships with the key person and other members of the team who will also be caring for the children on a daily basis. After three sessions, progress is reviewed and more settling in sessions are offered if required.

All staff in the nursery role model for the children to ensure they have positive influences to look up to.

What specialist services and expertise are avaliable at or accessed by the setting/school/college?

At Basingstoke Day Nursery and Pre-School we have a highly experienced Special Educational Needs Co-ordinator who continues to keep up to date by attending regularly training.

What training have the staff supporting children and young people with SEND had? Are any being trained currently?

All staff are kept up-to-date with current training and development to ensure we are teaching the children to a consistently high standard across the whole nursery. Our practice is tailored to the child’s individual needs, always.

If extra training may be required for a child with SEND, we will endeavour to undertake this training to ensure all needs of the child are met. We will assess this on an individual basis and therefore this may not always be possible, however we will strive to make this happen.

How will my child/young person be included in activities outside this classroom including school trips?

We will risk assess each activity and make necessary changes to ensure all children are included. We will seek parental permission before going on local walks and ensure we provide information on all upcoming events celebrated in nursery, so parents can mirror this at home.

How accessible is the setting/school/college enviroment?

Our nursery is on two levels with stair access to the 2nd level. Due to restrictions on facilities and personnel trained to deal with profound disabilities, we will assess each child/family on an individual basis.

How will the setting/school/college prepare and support my child/young person to join the setting/school/college or the next stage of education and life?

Transferring to a new setting we understand can be an extremely emotional and overwhelming time for both the child and their parents. As a result, we offer settling in sessions, as mentioned above, to ensure the child settles into their new room smoothly. The number of settling in sessions will be bespoke. Usually, we offer three settling in sessions, but more can be offered if we feel the child may need a little bit more time to adjust to their new surroundings.

The first settling in session is very valuable as this allows us to gather all information about the child from their parents; including their interests, likes, dislikes and their routine and home life. We aim to find out as much information as possible so we can best support the child and their family.

If the child is transitioning to another room within the nursery, we ensure they will have frequent visits to their new room, meeting their new key person and all other staff in the room. There will be a transition meeting the month before the child moves up. Parents are invited in for a meeting with their child’s current key person and their new key person and is a chance for the parents to find out the differences between the two rooms and express any concerns they might have.

If a child is leaving our nursery, the SENCo and class teacher of their new school will liaise to ensure there is a full handover of information. All teachers and invited into the nursery to meet the children in their familiar environment. We will provide activities and opportunities to talk about their new school. For example in role play activities we use school uniform in our dress-up area so that the children can become familiar with this.

How are the setting's/school's/college's resources allocated and matched to children's/young people's special educational needs?

We will seek advice from other professionals involved to ensure we have specialist resources available to the children which will support and aid their learning and development, wherever possible.

How is the decision made about what type and how much support my child/young person will receive?

We will seek advice from a range of professionals when both our nursery and a child’s family are in agreement that additional support is required to meet their SEND. There are a wide range of professionals available through the referral process. These professionals are there to support, make recommendations and assess needs in order to be able to support the child and their family in the most effective way.

An inclusion partnership meeting may be needed if the child with SEND is working with a range of other professionals. They will need to review progress that has been made and put in place further support which may be needed.

How are parents involved in the setting/school/college? How can I be involved?

We ensure parents are involved in every decision made, regarding their child’s support. As a result of this, we will implement a Child Support Plan which will be used in the nursery and will be used as an aid to support the child’s learning at home.

We have introduced a Nursery and Home communication book for each child with SEND so we can communicate with parents in more detail to find out about their strengths at home and any challenges they may face. From this, we can put strategies in to place to focus on these challenges and provide additional support wherever it may be needed.
