SEND Employability Hubs provide young people with education, skills, training and personal development, as well as work experience placements, and supported internships. The type of pathway is based on their individual needs and aspirations. The hubs also provide opportunities for young people to access other educational opportunities within colleges (find out more about SEND Employability Hubs here)
Andover College is an open access, inclusive general further education college offering both young people and adults with a variety of needs a comprehensive range of vocational and academic qualifications. We aim to create a secure and welcoming environment for all members of our community. Students have access to a programme of study that supports their needs and aspirations. We take a student centred approach to ensuring outcomes. Students are encouraged to reach their personal best.
The SEND Employability Hub provide routes to employment for young people with EHCP’s who are studying on Foundation or Mainstream Courses. Each course is designed around preparing for adulthood, containing 1:1 support, work experience and job coaching.

- What does your service do?
SEND Employability Hubs bring together workplace and non-workplace learning to develop and deliver a flexible programme focusing on the elements young people with SEND need to gain independence and skills which maximises progression into sustained employment and independence to transform the life chances of young people with SEND.
Core elements of the programme include:
- Education, skills and personal development support, in line with the pathways of ‘Preparing for Adulthood’ framework from the Department for Education (Employment, Independent Living, Community Inclusion and Health).
- Opportunities to engage with employers and gain experience in the workplace through work experience, work placements and Supported Internships.
- Progression pathways into Paid Employment or Supported Apprenticeship
- Who does your service provide for?
Young people who:
- live in Hampshire
- have an Education Health and Care Plan (EHCP)
- are leaving statutory education in the summer (moving into year 12)
- are enthusiastic and ambitious about a future job
- How can I start using the service?
If you are a young person interested in joining the Employability Hub you can discuss this at your next EHCP review, contact your SEN caseworker or contact the Hub directly.
- How are decisions made about who can use your service?
Places will be agreed between Hampshire County Council and the respective college. To discuss joining one of the Employability Hubs, speak to your SEN caseworker and/or discuss options at your next annual review. Alternatively, contact the college directly to have an initial conversation.

- What training are the staff supporting children and young people with SEN and Disabilities had or are having?
Staff have a wide variety of qualifications based on their areas of specialism - including Postgraduate qualifications. Our Assistant Principal - Student Experience has the National SENCO accreditation (University of Winchester) our college nurse is a Registered Nurse, our exam access arrangements are undertaken by staff with a Masters in SpLD and we have a qualified college counsellor. All of our LSA staff are expected to undertake a Level 3 Learning Support (Reflective Practice) course that links to the National Standards of Learning Support Practitioners.
In addition:
• All staff at the College are trained in Health and Safety, Equality & Diversity and Safeguarding which is regularly updated.
• A range of training sessions are offered at the college for teaching and support staff throughout the year, as well as external training.
• Specific training is organised as needed and expert help and advice is sought where necessary.
• We have a regular programme of continuing professional development (CPD)
• The corporate induction process includes information on the SEND policy and processes
• Keyworkers ensure staff have the relevant information on students and share effective practice to support our students
• Our Wellbeing team have received numerous and diverse levels of training in areas including Autism awareness, Online safety, CSE, GIO, Trauma Informed Practitioner, Mental Health First Aid, Suicide Prevention, Working with students who Self Harm, Sensory Needs/Diet awareness and DSL training.
