How will early years setting/school/college staff support my child/young person?

The SENCo at our preschool will oversee and plan the educational programme for any children with SEN/disabilities. This will involve regular sharing of information between parents/carers, Key Person, SENCo and any outside agency. The SENCo liaises with the Services for Young Children Area Inclusion Coordinator for advice and guidance in setting realistic targets for your child. Through careful monitoring which includes Individual Education Plans and regular meetings progress can be ensured. Depending on your child’s needs one to one support may be provided.

How will the curriculum be matched to my child's/young person's needs?

We deliver the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) through a variety of play based activities and learning experiences. These are carefully planned with each child in mind to ensure progression. Individual Educational Plans for children with additional needs alongside learning journals and observations, assessments and planning processes are in place for every child.

How will both you and I know how my child/young person is doing and how will you help me to support my child's/young person's learning?

In addition to normal reporting arrangements- general chats and formal termly meetings - there will be additional opportunities for meetings to discuss your child’s progress. Through regular observations, IEP’s etc. the preschool will be able to report on targets reached, progression and future targets for your child. Through this discussion any involvement from other agencies will be looked at, discussed and included in your child’s future plan. As parents/carers/family you are involved in all planning for your child to enable you to give support at home this is achieved through termly meetings to discuss your child’s next steps and targets.

What support will there be for my child's/young person's overall well being?

At each session we generally have 5 members of staff of which at least 2 are first aid trained. We have policies for the administering of medicines and health and safety including manual handling which are reviewed regularly. We have a named staff member who is responsible for behaviour and safeguarding and undertakes regular training including attending local support groups to ensure all up to date legislation is covered This information can be found in our policies A member of staff is designated as our Behaviour Coordinator and all staff have general training with regards to safeguarding issues..

What specialist services and expertise are avaliable at or accessed by the setting/school/college?

We have a member of staff who has undertaken courses and training in Makaton sign language and behaviour management. We have termly input from our area Inclusion Co-ordinator(INCo) at support meetings and know where to access outside services e.g. Portage Occupational Therapy and Speech and Language to name a few.

What training have the staff supporting children and young people with SEND had? Are any being trained currently?

To support children with SEND the SENCo has received mandatory training required for the role of Special Needs Co-ordinator and attends termly support group sessions to receive any updates. All staff f have received training in Speech and Language and a daily language group is in place for children that require it. . Other types of support/training will be accessed on an as and when need basis.

How will my child/young person be included in activities outside this classroom including school trips?

>We ask parents to accompany children on our summer outing which is the main outside outing that we have. Other activities such as sports day trips to the local shops trips to the park will be planned with appropriate staff in place Risk assessments are carried out which includes consultation with parents to enable outside activities to be accessible to all children.

How accessible is the setting/school/college enviroment?

Badger Farm Preschool Playgroup is based in the local community centre where we have the use of one main room, plus use of the large sports hall at certain times of the day. The main room opens through a standard fire door onto a level outside courtyard area. The community centre is all on one level with an accessible disabled toilet. We use the ladies lavatory which is shared with other user groups. We have limited storage facilities as we are a set up and pack away preschool. We communicate and liaise with the Ethnic Minority and Travellers Achievement Service (EMTAS) where needed for children with English as another language and use visual timetables/Makaton sign language when needed.

How will the setting/school/college prepare and support my child/young person to join the setting/school/college or the next stage of education and life?

We encourage all new children and their parents to visit the preschool prior to starting where they will meet the staff and in particular your key person. All relevant information is gathered to aid a smooth transition into the preschool. When children are due to transfer to the next provision/school, transition meetings and visits will be arranged so that all relevant information can be transferred Parents are included in the transition meetings and these are arranged at a mutually agreeable time. Our Special Educational Needs Co-ordinator(SENCo) will visit and work with the new provider to ensure smooth transition is discussed and understood Any resources that have been specifically used during the time at our preschool will be passed on to the new provision.

How are the setting's/school's/college's resources allocated and matched to children's/young people's special educational needs?

We ensure that all children with Special Educational Needs and disabilities are met within the preschools ability with the funds that we receive. Budgets are allocated on a needs basis and extra funding is sought from Hampshire County Council if the entitlement is met.

How is the decision made about what type and how much support my child/young person will receive?

The preschool Supervisor/Special Educational Needs Co-ordinator(Senco) will discuss the child’s needs with you, the area Inclusion Co-ordinator( Inco) and outside agencies, to discuss how much support is required... By constantly reviewing your child’s targets on IEPs and discussions from all staff the preschool can judge whether the support has had an impact and whether changes need to be made.

How are parents involved in the setting/school/college? How can I be involved?

Our preschool has an open door policy, and parents are encouraged to become as involved with the preschool as they wish. We are a registered charity with a committee of parents that oversee the running of the preschool. Alongside this parents are able to help out at sessions or with small behind the scenes jobs depending on their own circumstances. Parents are a valued and important part of our preschool.
