The Cornloft is a small private painting, drawing and pottery studio built in what used to be a 19th century corn store, situated in Stockbridge, Hampshire, just off the High Street and is surrounded by a working farm.

It is a safe and supportive environment with a relaxed friendly atmosphere in easy reach of the shops and the countryside of the Test Valley. Private parking.

The studio provides a space and the opportunity to play, express, experiment, explore materials, to help develop new skills and promote ideas and approaches and processes, offering the opportunity to have fun, relax, be expressive and emotive, to personally develop artistic ideas, use their imagination, discuss personal narratives, that help reflect, connect and communicate potential experiences, visually or verbally.

“We have art so that we may not perish from the truth” Nietzsche.

Established in 1994.

Jeff Walker FRSA runs the studio and is a Creative and Therapeutic arts tutor/practitioner who has over 28 years experience of working with children, teenagers, adults, families and specialised groups as part of on-going therapeutic support, held at the studio, just call to discuss your needs- as well as facilitating specialist group art projects.

For Ten years Jeff was an art and design lecturer/ personal tutor and internal moderator, HOD,  across a multitude of art and design courses and universities in the south, and continues to have a  special interest in Creativity, art process and history of art, education, psychology, psychiatry, SEN, creative therapeutic processes and engagement linked with education, health, wellbeing and social care. Supervised from 1993-2021 by Dr AJ Burnfield MBBS FRCPych.

“ if I could say it in words there would be no reason to paint” Edward hopper.

The referrals received mainly relate to requests for help with a variety of complex psychological, emotional, behavioural, mental health and contextual environmental difficulties for individuals who for some, may refuse to see people formally labelled as health, social or educational professionals, therapists or counsellors.

The work I do explicitly involves the use of art and design materials and processes, however implicit to my work is engagement and trust developing a positive relationship, geared to listening, conversations and discussions, facilitating and working through past experiences, present circumstances and looking at future aspirations. Therapeutic Alliance.

The ultimate aim is to help support children, teenagers and adults to gain confidence and self-esteem, improve relationships and social skills and increase their self respect so that they can once more find a place in their community.

The studio has a relaxed informal setting, tucked away on the edge of Stockbridge, Hampshire, UK.

Creativity, the process and activity of art and design, helps facilitate non verbal communication. Involvement ranges from fun, play, experimenting, being either skill based, innovative or abstract, using emotive and expressive mark making which individually can help promote self development, self awareness and change collectively. No formal analysis takes place, but the work although personal, may reflect insight, foresight and hindsight to both participants and observers as well to provide an atmosphere for developing confidence, self esteem, awareness, clarity and understanding.

The activities range from clay, pottery, throwing, hand built pieces, modelling and sculpture to visual studies, painting and drawing that can be playful, fun, experimental expressive, observational, analytical, decorative, symbolic or skill based.

All art studio materials are provided and all work can be taken away, presenting new opportunities to reconnect with family, friends or their community.

The journey to and from the studio provides a positive opportunity, offering time, shared closed conversation with staff or family, the journey, distance and a change of outlook helps separate place, thoughts and experiences.

The studio has an abundant supply of materials to encourage creativity and participation and is not a clinical environment, reflected in the constantly changing artwork on display.

The one and a half hour sessions are for Individuals and groups, attendance is usually weekly, although some attend for two hours, twice weekly at the studio.

Invoicing is monthly, and discussed prior to booking, Bacs payment system, P and O number required.

Group projects would need extra time for meetings discussions and logistics to look at aims, objectives and outcomes.

Just call to discuss and to arrange a time to meet and talk. Call jeff on 07714182071 to discuss availability and suitability.

Participant:

“Jeff helps me stay positive. He doesn’t tell me that what I am doing is

wrong. He doesn’t tell me what I should be doing and he doesn’t patronise me.

He helps me realise that I can make good decisions on my own, that I can

control what I do and what happens to me.”

Lead SEN school recommendation.

Jeff has been working with Year 5 / 6 pupils at our school over

the last 2 years. His work with these pupils has provided us

with valuable insight into the way these pupils view school and

life in general. This has really helped us to adapt strategies and

provision put in place to support these pupils. The pupils who

work with Jeff produce some amazing pieces of Art and these

have been developed into a portfolio of their work. Self-esteem

for these pupils has shown a real improvement, as they now

view Art as a strength of theirs, where they struggled to

identify strengths before. Jeff has been able to build positive

and trusting relationships with these pupils and has helped

them to consistently reflect on the social and behavioural

choices they have made. Over time, this has really helped them

to develop a more mature attitude and responsibility for their

actions. I would highly recommend Jeff to any schools that

have pupils in need of a high level of social, emotional and

mental health support.

The Cornloft Art Studio is a private confidential, independent resource, registered with Hampshire County Council, as an alternative provision for emotional health and wellbeing services.

Founded in 1994 the Cornloft is a small painting and pottery studio built in what used to be a 19th century corn store, situated in Stockbridge, Hampshire, just off the High Street and is surrounded by a working farm. It is a safe and supportive environment with a relaxed friendly atmosphere in easy reach of the shops and the countryside of the Test Valley.

Jeff Walker runs the studio and is a Creative and Therapeutic arts tutor/practitioner has over 23 years experience of working with children, teenagers, families and groups as part of on-going therapeutic support. The referrals received mainly relate to requests for help with a variety of psychological, emotional, behavioural and contextual problems for individuals who may refuse to see people formally labelled as health, social or educational professionals, therapists or counsellors.

The work I do explicitly involves the use of art and design materials and processes, however implicit to my work is engagement and trust geared to working through past experiences, present circumstances and future aspirations.

I use creative art activities together with conversational and listening approaches.

The main benefit of referring to the studio is that people do not feel labelled, but instead can develop a trusting relationship whilst participating in a creative activity. The work becomes therapeutic but they see themselves as attending in order to fulfil artistic or creative needs.

The ultimate aim is to help children; teenagers and adults to gain confidence and self-esteem, improve relationships and social skills and increase their self respect so that they can once more find a place in their community.

Sessions are arranged, either for an hour or usually and an hour and a half, weekly and invoiced monthly.

Our philosophy

Creative arts are an enjoyable and rewarding experience.

Creative thinking and doing can be a helpful way of breaking out of old habits and out dated beliefs.

Art is a way of transforming life and transcending a limited view of self.

Innate individuality, character, identity and personality, surfaces when given the space and freedom to explore, express, process and evaluate content and experience.

Creativity means doing something different – experimenting with new possibilities and enabling change.

Producing Art promotes possibilities for sharing thoughts and feelings, possessing a socially contributing role.

The creative process is in itself therapeutic – promoting self confidence and self worth, raising self esteem and self value.

Artistic activities divert the mind and raise the mood – leading to emotional contentment and physical relaxation.

Creativity provides the environment for learning to give and receive praise, or criticism and for the sharing of ideas, feelings and personal concerns.

Creativity is a doing process, possessing the ability to transcend traditional ideas, rules, patterns, relationships and to create through self awareness a new more meaningful relationship.

Therapy is doing something different – experimenting with new possibilities for change.
