- Who does your service provide for?
- ExcelLearn works with Primary, Secondary and Tertiary students, as well as Under-graduates and Adults experiencing difficulties associated with Dyslexia, and other SpLDs. Should the needs of the potential service user fall outside of our expertise, we signpost them to a relevant professional service.
- How can I start using the service?
- OurOur services can be accessed via our website, by telephone, and by email; a Facebook page is under development. Our website provides more detail about us, and may answer any questions. We are open to referrals from SENCOs and other Agencies. More frequently, however, we are approached directly by concerned parents, or by the potential service user. Usually, our initial discussions will help a new enquirer to make a decision as to whether we can meet their needs. Longer consultations at the Centre are offered to those wishing to discuss their needs in more depth. This also provides an opportunity to view our facilities and experience what a welcoming and positive learning environment we offer. Our professional services are chargeable, but a client may allocate direct payment or personal budget to meet the fees. Fees are dependent on the nature of services required and will be quoted for on request.
- Where is it located and what areas does it cover?
- Our Assessment and Tuition Centre is situated in Shirley, Southampton. The majority of service users visit this facility. However, we also provide a peripatetic Specialist Tuition Service that will visit schools, colleges and universities across the county during the daytime. Our Assessment Service operates from our Centre. However, if required, Assessments may also take place at other suitable venues nominated by the Service User.
- How are decisions made about who can use your service?
- Normally a decision is made following a joint consultation between the Parents/Guardians/Educational Establishments and ourselves. It may seem appropriate to involve the potential Service User in this consultation, depending on their age and/or level of understanding of their difficulties. The final decision about access to the service will lie with ourselves. We reserve the judgment to decide if our services can effectively meet the needs presented by the potential Service User.
- How do you communicate with service users and how are they involved in decision making?
- Communication with Service Users and Parents/Guardians/Educational Establishments is vital to maintain happy and productive working relationships. Young people, particularly those with SpLD, are helped by the use of ICT devices such as SmartPhones and Tablets, to keep in regular contact with friends and support workers such as ourselves. Their use is vital to developing confidence and a strong rapport; at the same time, they teach service users vital writing and conversation skills in a subliminal fashion. Contact with Parents/Guardians/Educational Establishments is maintained by normal means, such as phone, email and text-messages. In the case of students using our Tuition Service, Parents/Guardians are encouraged to have an end of session review each week. Where this may not be possible, regular half-termly consultations are available. Continuous feedback is given to the service user during the session, and at the end of each session. Complimentary activities may also be set for the service user to undertake in their own time. One of our approaches to engage children and young people, in a meaningful learning habit, is to draw on their own interests. We encourage them to discuss their interests, as well as to research and write about what means the most to them. Once they have re-discovered their interest in the learning process, our experience is that they will much more eagerly engage with strategies to overcome their learning difficulties.
- Is your service fully accessible?
- The facilities are situated on the ground floor with direct access to the street where off-street free parking is available. The facility has normal width exterior doors so may not prove to be wheelchair accessible. Ground floor toilet facilities are available.
- What training are the staff supporting children and young people with SEN and Disabilities had or are having?
- ExcelLearn Education Centre was founded in 1998 by husband and wife team, Phil and Alison Roseblade. Phil is a qualified teacher with 18 years of varied experience in mainstream establishments. A dyslexic himself, he has overcome many obstacles and prejudices in his personal life to achieve an OCR Diploma in Specific Learning Difficulties; and has also qualified as a Sounds-Write Reading/Spelling Teacher. He is a full member of Hampshire Dyslexia Association. He is also a full member of PATOSS, the Professional Association of Teachers of Students with SpLD, and the immediate past Chairman of South Hants Local Group of PATOSS. He holds a current SpLD Assessment Award Practicing Certificate. He has worked to a Senior Management level in the primary sector, as well as spending some years teaching in Special Education and the Independent Sector. Alison is a qualified teacher, with a Bachelor of Education Degree, who has varied experience up to senior management level across both the secondary and primary phases. Alison was a highly effective primary SENCO (Special Educational Needs Coordinator) over many years. Two OFSTED inspections confirmed this, stating that SEN provision was a "model of good practice." Her work also enjoyed well-deserved high reputation throughout the LEA, and she regularly supported SENCO's from other schools, who visited to observe her good practice. More recently, Alison has been employed as a Complex Needs Manager. She has been able to offer her wide experience training teaching staff in local schools. We both maintain a full CPD programme.

- All staff have up-to-date Disclosure and Barring Service Certificates, showing exemplary records.
