How does the setting/school/college know if children/young people need extra help and what should I do if I think my child/young person may have special educational needs?
  • We use our settling in process as an opportunity to meet you and your child, to talk together and gain an awareness of your child’s routines, interests, specific needs and discuss any concerns, worries or queries that you may have.
  • You are also asked to complete “About Me” forms, to share relevant information and knowledge about your child.
  • During your child's setting in process with us, we will spend time getting to know them.
  • We complete regular Summative Assessments for each child, to track their development and identify where additional support or intervention may be required.
  • We work closely with parents/carers to create and maintain a positive partnership which supports their child, and welcome regular feedback and updates from them
How will early years setting/school/college staff support my child/young person?

  • We use our settling in process as an opportunity to meet you and your child, to talk together and gain an awareness of your child’s routines, interests, specific needs and discuss any concerns, worries or queries that you may have.
  • You are also asked to complete “About Me” forms, to share relevant information and knowledge about your child.
  • During your child setting in process with us, we will spend time getting to know them through play.
  • We complete regular Summative Assessments for each child, to track their development and highlight where additional support or intervention may be required.
  • We have a designated Special Educational Needs Coordinator (SENCO) who works to ensure each individual child’s needs are fully supported by the child’s Key Person and any other practitioners who will be supporting your child.
  • With input from parent/carer and your child’s Key  Person, we write Individual Education Plans (IEP’s). These identify your child’s interests and strengths as well as any areas to further develop.
  • At Doves we provide regular small intervention groups throughout the day to ensure that targeted children are supported and monitored regularly.
  • We work in partnership with external agencies (including Inclusion Team, Speech and Language Therapists) and other professionals to support your child.
  • We are also able to hold ‘team around the child’ meetings at the nursery: these help to enable you to be fully involved with your child’s education and ensure that your child’s needs are fully supported and reviewed
How will the curriculum be matched to my child's/young person's needs?
  • Each child’s needs are matched to the Early Years Foundation Stage.

  •  Appropriate strategies will be identified and implemented to support your child’s learning and development

How will both you and I know how my child/young person is doing and how will you help me to support my child's/young person's learning?
  • We use Tapestry (an on-line learning journal) which provides an opportunity for you to see regular observations made of your child whist at the nursery. We also welcome and encourage you, as a parent, to share/add observations that you have made of your child. Thus, providing us with a full view of the experiences and interests that your child has both at nursery and at home
  • Our data from summative assessments is shared with you, to keep you updated of your child’s development.
  • Your child’s key person will set appropriate next steps: this allows both you and your child’s key person to work in partnership to enable your child to achieve their individual next step(s)
What support will there be for my child's/young person's overall well being?
  • Doves uses a keyperson/co-keyperson system ensuring continuity in the care of your child.
  • Our planning is centred around individual children’s interests, to help them become a “learner”.
  • Our daily routines ensure that all children have a free flow access to both the indoor and outdoor learning environment .
  • We value the views of our parents and families. Should you have any queries, problems or concerns , we aim to deal with then quickly and sensitively as possible
  • we aim to provide a safe, stimulating and welcoming environment for your child to flourish in
What specialist services and expertise are available at or accessed by the setting/school/college?
  • We access the support of our Inclusion Team, who can provide us with relevant support & information and guide us in making referrals to outside agencies
  • Our setting liaises with any outside agency to support your child within the nursery environment.
  • The setting also accesses support/advice from a range of services such as: Speech and Language therapists, Portage and the Health visiting team if required.
What training have the staff supporting children and young people with SEND had? Are any being trained currently?

Our staff members have participated in a range of training opportunities which include:

  • SENCO
  • First aid
  • Safeguarding
  • Epi pen training
  • Inclusion conference

We are always keen to learn any specific skill required to enable a child to attend our setting, for example, administering necessary injections, physiotherapy exercises

How will my child/young person be included in activities outside this classroom including school trips?

  • Risk assessments are always carried out prior to visits being made, to ensure children’s safety at all times. We aim to include all children in activities outside of the setting.
  • Lower ratios of practitioners to children are applied to outside visits, to ensure your child has the best possible experience
How accessible is the setting/school/college environment?

Doves is a large building with rooms over the ground floor and the 1st Floor in use for our children. We have 3 large rooms and a medium sized room downstairs and are able to adapt the room use, when required, to facilitate inclusion

Our ground floor has :

Low level entrance

Buggies/Wheelchair friendly front door

Parking in our own car-park

Makaton use to support children

Visual aids used

How will the setting/school/college prepare and support my child/young person to join the setting/school/college or the next stage of education and life?

Doves recognises that all tranisitions, whether from home to starting nursery, from one room to another at nursery, or from nursery to school, are very important

We do this in a variety of different ways to best support your child, this includes:

  • Our settling in process, through which we aim to meet yours and your child’s needs
  • Transition visits also take place when a child moves from our Baby room to our 2’s and 3’s Room, and from there to our Pre School Group, from our Pre School Group to school: each of these is supported by the child’s key person.
  • Key information is shared about your child with the relevant people or setting
  • The setting works closely with local schools, offering transition meetings to all schools and attending the Area Transition Meeting.
  • For Transitioning to school we use Displays using photos of the schools; School uniforms are used in the Role Play Areas; we also Social Stories.
  • We welcome schools to attend our setting, to see the children in familiar surroundings.
  • With your permission,  we can share Tapestry journals, summative assessments with schools, ensuring they have as much information as possible about your child to help the transition process
How are the setting's/school's/college's resources allocated and matched to children's/young people's special educational needs?
  • From the term after their 3rd birthday. children are entitled to 15 hours funding per week (570 hours per year,Term Time Only). We also offer for this funding to be “Stretched” ( 570 hours per year, stretched across the year, 11hrs per week) .
  • Some parents will be eligible to apply for the additional 15 hours funding (Term Time Only), or additional 11 hours (stretched over the year), making a total of 30 hours (Term time only), 22 hours (Stretched Offer).
  • For those who meet the criteria, there is also 2 year old funding ( which can be taken as term time only or stretched)
  • When a child's needs have been identified, resources can be adapted to fit their individual needs.
  • Hampshire Equipment Service may be able to support with equipment
  • Occupational Therapy is available to offer guidance regarding specialised equipment
How is the decision made about what type and how much support my child/young person will receive?
  • If your child has a diagnosis already in place, then other agencies may be involved.
  • If not, when their needs have been identified, with parental permission, Doves will follow advice from outside agencies such as Occupational Therapy, Health Visitor, Speech and Language Therapist and the Inclusion Team
  • Key/co person will support the child following guidance from the SENCO using Individual Education Plan (IEP).
  • The progress of your child will be monitored every half term, information and data gathered is shared with you.
How are parents involved in the setting/school/college? How can I be involved?

At Doves, we value parental involvement throughout your time with us. Your involvement in the settling in process, sharing information with us, at the start of and throughout your time here is very important to us.

  • Doves Nursery has an open-door policy and parents are always welcome.
