- What does your service do?
- The KIDS Rushmoor service offers a combination of holiday and Saturday club provision. More information can be found on the [http://www.kids.org.uk/Event/rushmoor-playscheme KIDS website] These service is offered to disabled children aged 8 – 19. We offer opportunities to access a variety of activities within the setting including sensory and soft play, arts and crafts, cooking, sports activities, and child initiated play. This service runs from Samuel Cody Specialist Sports College, but we also take young people out on trips in to the local community. Activities have included swimming, bowling and a visit to the county park. Individual support needs can be discussed and the appropriate level of staffing put into place. If after discussions the service is not deemed to be the most appropriate setting we can signpost to alternative services where possible.
- Who does your service provide for?
- This club is open to young people aged 8-19 who have a disability, additional needs and need support to participate fully in play and leisure activities. You must live in or be in education within Hampshire. All attendees must have or be applying for a Gateway Card. This can be applied for [http://www3.hants.gov.uk/childrens-services/specialneeds/shortbreaks/gatewaycard.htm here] The service can support young people with a wide range of needs, this includes young people with ASD, Downs syndrome, cerebral palsy, wheelchair users and medical needs though this is not an exhaustive list. Group sizes range from 8-15 young people. We can offer 1:1 support where needed with a minimum ratio of 1:5 onsite and 1:3 offsite. If a young person requires higher than 1:1 support then this can be discussed at the time of enquiry.
- How can I start using the service?
- OurReferrals are usually made by the parent/carer but can come from other professionals. This can include Social Services, health care workers and teachers. Referrals need to be submitted to the KIDS Senior Practitioner. A portfolio form will need to be completed and a risk assessment – this gives us the information we would need to support the young person’s individual needs. The form can be sent out by post or via email and a home visits arranged. Young people are unable to begin attending the club prior to the completion of this form. Sessions cost £12.50 - £15.00 for 6 hours. An invoice would be sent out for this fee – payable via cash, card, bacs, and cheque. We do offer a hardship scheme which can be discussed at any time and is considered on an individual basis. We do not currently operate a waiting list but there may be a delay in starting if sessions are already full. If sessions are full then a cancellation list is operated. We try to offer sessions to young people on a fair allocation system to ensure that everyone is able to access the service.
- Where is it located and what areas does it cover?
- This service mainly support children in the Rushmoor and Hart areas however any disabled child within Hampshire can access if they hold a Gateway card and the club is suitable for them. The service is based at Samuel Cody Specialist Sports College but we also have outings in the local community.
- How are decisions made about who can use your service?
- Access to the service is based on children being within the 8-19 years age bracket and either living in or in education in Hampshire. We will discuss the suitability of the service as part of the referral process to ensure that the staff team can meet care and support needs. Once a young person is on the books for the service they will receive information on upcoming trips and activities in a timely manner. Spaces on sessions can be booked by phone/email/text/in person. Once the allotted spaces are filled we operate a cancellation list.
- How do you communicate with service users and how are they involved in decision making?
- Activities are tailored to individuals interests and preferences. The staff team have knowledge of different communication methods including Makaton and PECS and are able to present information in these formats if needed. At the end of sessions we complete observations/feedback forms with the children and ask them if they have any positive or constructive feedback on the session Parent/carer feedback is also important. We have feedback forms which are sent out enabling parents to voice ideas/feedback. We hold a termly ‘parent forum’ at our Fareham centre and invite all KIDS parents and carers to come along for coffee and a chat about how we can improve our services and better meet the needs of families.
- Is your service fully accessible?
- The site we use is accessible for those in wheelchairs and we have access to a changing room and bed. We try to support all children to access the facilities as well as any trips we offer. Prior to any trip we check the accessibility of the venue and complete a risk assessment. We currently do not have any staff trained to support young people who need tracheostomy support.
- What training are the staff supporting children and young people with SEN and Disabilities had or are having?
- KIDS has its own unique e-Learning programme (used by approximately 25 local authorities). Levels 1 and 2 are mandatory for all workers. Level 4 courses need to be undertaken in order to work with children that have specific conditions: 1 Introduction to working with disabled children and young people 1 Your legal responsibilities when working with disabled children and young people 1 Child protection 2 Understanding your role and responsibilities 2 Personal care 2 Communicating with children and young people 2 Developing relationships with children and young people 2 First Aid 2 Health and safety 2 Understanding and managing risk 4 Makaton 4 Medication and medical care: children and young people with multiple health requirements 4 Working with disabled young people 14+ 4 PECS 4 British Sign Language New workers shadow experienced staff and we offer a rolling training programme on areas such as first aid, administration of medication, epilepsy, manual handling, Team Teach, safeguarding and Makaton which supplements our e-Learning. We can also attend to any additional training which may be required for us to support a young person’s specific needs.
- How will I know my child is safe?
- Prior to a child / young person accessing the service a thorough portfolio form is completed. This gives us all of the relevant information to enable us to safely support the individual needs of the child / young person. All KIDS staff and volunteers undergo a robust recruitment process and an enhanced DBS check. References are verified prior to commencing work and staff then undertake a full induction programme. Regular staff training ensures that staff adhere to best practice at all times in accordance with the legal and regulatory environment and KIDS policies and procedures. All activities and venues are risk assessed and checked by a KIDS manager/co-ordinator.
