Our setting is accessible for those who may have mobility issues. We have accessible toilets and level access to our outdoor learning environment. We have a dedicated SENDCO who is not only experienced but passionate in supporting children with additional needs. We actively search for ways to support the individual and their families but making contact with organisations who many be able to support them, and, if applicable, apply for funding for the setting to better meet their needs.

- How does the setting/school/college know if children/young people need extra help and what should I do if I think my child/young person may have special educational needs?
At Treetops Pre-School parents and carers are welcome to have a look around the Setting with their child at a mutually convenient time where questions and concerns can be addressed. A ‘meet and greet’ session is arranged before your child starts at Treetops to complete the registration forms and meet your child’s key person who will work closely with you and share your child’s progress. Further visits can be arranged for you to ‘stay and play’ with your child before their start date if required. We offer home visits before your child starts at Treetops, where your child’s keyperson and back up keyperson visit you and your child at home in a relaxed environment. This helps build a trusting relationship between your child and their key person. All children attending the Pre-School are monitored and observed in line with the Early Years Curriculum. A 2 year old development check is carried out by your child’s key person and shared with you. Any concerns regarding development will be discussed. Parent’s evenings are held three times a year where you can share your child’s progress with their key person and agree the next steps in your child’s learning and development. At the beginning and end of each session you are able to talk to your child’s key person to share their achievements and answer any questions. The Pre-School has a dedicated Special Education Needs Co-ordinator (SENCO) who liaises with your child’s key person, you and outside agencies if required.
- How will early years setting/school/college staff support my child/young person?
The SENCO will liaise with you, your child’s key person and any outside agencies involved, to monitor your child’s progress. Individual Education Plans (IEP) or Behaviour Plans are drawn up in consultation with parents and agencies who are involved with your child. Our policies and procedures are available for you to read on our website www.treetopshedgeend.co.uk and a copy is held in the Setting. You can include any information you feel we need to know about your child on your child’s registration form to ensure a smooth transition into Pre-School. A questionnaire is sent out to obtain feedback on how you feel your child has settled at Treetops and to see if you feel we could have helped this transition further in any other way. Treetops works closely with Services for Young Children and the Area Inclusion Team. SENCO support meetings are attended regularly.
- How will the curriculum be matched to my child's/young person's needs?
The Pre-School uses Individual Education Plans and Behavioural Plans to inform all those involved with your child. This plan will help with physical, social and cognitive development. Regular observations on your child are carried out by their key person and progress is recorded in your child’s ‘All about me’ file, which is shared with parents once a term. The planning for each session is built around the children’s interests; with input from your child’s key person as to each Childs individual needs and next steps. One-to-one support is provided if your child requires adult input to ensure their own and others safety.
- How will both you and I know how my child/young person is doing and how will you help me to support my child's/young person's learning?
Parent’s evenings are held once a term to share your child’s progress. You can talk to your child’s key person, SENCO or Manager at the beginning or end of every session. Individual Education Plans are reviewed with you, your child’s key person and SENCO according to your child’s individual needs. External agencies involved with your child are able to visit the Pre-School to observe and work with your child. The Pre-School uses the ‘Early Years Foundation Stage’ to record developmental progress https://www.gov.uk/early-years-foundation-stage. Information is shared with parents/carers through newsletters, fliers, a daily activity board placed outside the Pre-School and our notice board. Parents are welcome to ‘stay and play’ in the setting as arranged with the Manager.
- What support will there be for my child's/young person's overall well being?
Your child’s key person is responsible for building a close and trusting relationship with you and your child. All staff are responsible for keeping every child at Treetops safe at all times. Both inside and outside areas are checked before each session for safety. The children are encouraged to follow our four Golden Rules:
- We share the toys
- We be kind to our friends
- We all help to tidy up
- We walk indoors
Sand timers are used to encourage turn taking. There is a quiet area where children can sit and look at a book. All staff are First Aid trained. All medication is stored in a secure place. A record book is kept of all medications held and the dosage required. When medication is administered to a child, this is recorded and witnessed by another staff member. You will be asked to sign the medication book when you collect your child to acknowledge the medication issued to your child. All staff are Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) checked and regularly updated with safeguarding training. The pre-School policies include safeguarding, anti-bullying and special educational needs. All disclosures made by a child are treated in line with our child protection guidelines. An accessibility toilet with nappy changing facilities is available. Allergy and dietary information is posted in the kitchen with a photograph of the specific child to inform all staff. We operate a nut free zone. We provide healthy snacks and water is available at all times.
- What specialist services and expertise are available at or accessed by the setting/school/college?
All staff have a wealth of experience and have undergone training to Level 3 Early Years Child Care and Education.
- The Manager has a B.A Hons Degree in Childhood Studies – Level 6.
- Our SENCO attends regular support group meetings.
- The pre-School liaises with the Area Inclusion Team, Outreach Workers from our local Children’s Centres, Speech & Language Therapists and portage Services.
- The Deputy Manager has completed Behaviour Management training.
- What training have the staff supporting children and young people with SEND had? Are any being trained currently?
All staff have attended a ‘Speech and Language’ workshop and an ‘Introduction to Makaton’ training workshop. Makaton is a language programme designed to provide means of communication through signs, to help children to understand and be included, this is always supported by spoken language. A member of staff has completed a ‘Visual Impairment’ course.
- How will my child/young person be included in activities outside this classroom including school trips?
A parent/carer would be required to accompany their child on any trips organised by the Pre-School. For local walks the setting would work within the required adult/child ratios and areas visited would be wheelchair/buggy accessible as required. The Pre-School has a Christmas Party to which all children are invited; dietary information is held and adhered to. An Easter Egg Hunt/Easter Fayre is organised to which all children on role, their siblings and family members are welcome.
- How accessible is the setting/school/college environment?
The building is wheelchair and buggy accessible. There is an accessibility toilet with nappy changing facilities. Guidance from specialists would need to be sought if specialist equipment is required. There is one main playroom and sessions operate with 26 children and 5 or 6 staff. The main playroom measures 64 square metres (8 metres square), which could make manoeuvring a wheelchair around the room difficult. The foyer can be used for small group work. For parents/carers with English as an additional language we would involve the [http://www3.hants.gov.uk/emtas Ethnic Minorities and Travellers Achievement Service (EMTAS)]. All staff have experience of working with families with English as an additional language; we provide culturally appropriate items whenever possible.
- How will the setting/school/college prepare and support my child/young person to join the setting/school/college or the next stage of education and life?
You are welcome to visit Treetops with your child before their start date to help familiarise yourselves with the room and staff prior to joining. We arrange a ‘meet and greet’ evening where your child is able to meet their key person and back up key person and play while you complete the registration forms. We will liaise with your child’s school to arrange for the teachers to come and meet your child at Treetops and for your child’s key person to visit the school with your child during the Summer term. We will speak to the school/provision to give them as much information about your child as possible as well as sending on a copy of their Developmental Summary Form. If your child has SEND we may arrange a transition meeting to get all of the professionals working with your child together, to ensure the school or new provision know how best to support your child and what they need to put in place before. your child starts
- How are the setting's/school's/college's resources allocated and matched to children's/young people's special educational needs?
We have one playroom at Treetops, therefore a variety of resources are always available to meet the ages and stages of all children attending the setting. We may try to apply for additional funding to support a child with special educational needs. This funding would be used for possibly one-to-one support, specialist equipment or appropriate toys depending upon what is required.
- How is the decision made about what type and how much support my child/young person will receive?
If your child has already had a diagnosis then a meeting will be held involving yourselves, all outside agencies already involved with your child, your child’s key person, the settings SENCO, Area Inco and the Manager of Treetops to discuss what support would be appropriate for your child’s needs. If you child has no diagnosis, but you have expressed concerns or your child’s key person has identified concerns at the 2 year old check (which is carried out during the child’s first term) then a meeting will be held with you to discuss ways of supporting your child. The settings SENCO writes up an Individual Education Plan (IEP) in collaboration with you and the key person; this is revised each term and the impact of the support will be assessed and moderated as appropriate.
- How are parents involved in the setting/school/college? How can I be involved?
Parents are encouraged to come into Pre-School to share any hobbies or interests such as playing a musical instrument or talking to the children about their jobs e.g. nurses, fire officers, builders etc. Parents are welcome to ‘stay and play’ for an hour to see first-hand the daily running of the group. Questionnaires are sent out for you to comment on how your child has settled at treetops and to see if we could have done anything else to help your child settle in. Parents are encouraged to share their child’s achievements at home so that these can also be celebrated in the setting with all the children. Parents are encouraged to contribute to their child’s #All about me’ book and agree the next steps in their child’s learning and development.
