How will early years setting/school/college staff support my child/young person?
  • Your child's key-person will work with you and your child to identify and plan for your child's care, learning and developmental needs.
  • Your child will have a 'targeted plan' (Individual learning plan/Individual education plan) which identifies targets set for your child and will include the activities and support that will be provided to help your child make progress in their specific areas of need.
  • The Nursery has a designated SENCO (Special Educational Needs Co-ordinator) who will work with parents, children, the key-person and external agencies to provide additional support for your child.
  • The Nursery runs a language and listening group which focuses on attention, listening and language skills.
  • We use a range of visual cues and some Makaton signs to support communication.
  • After gaining  permission from you,  the Nursery is able to contact the Area Inclusion Officer who can provide advice and practical support for the Nursery in planning for your child's needs and can help make links between other outside agencies who can provide more specialised support. 
How will the curriculum be matched to my child's/young person's needs?
  • It is important that all children have access to a broad and balanced curriculum.
  • We use information gathered from observation, assessment, parents and outside agencies to identify your child's interests, their preferred learning style, their strengths and needs  so that we can plan appropriate activities that match your child's individual learning and developmental requirements.
  • The Nursery differentiates activities so that children can access the curriculum; an activity will have an extended and simplified level, we may adapt or use different types of resources, or we may plan individually differentiated activities to meet your child's needs.
How will both you and I know how my child/young person is doing and how will you help me to support my child's/young person's learning?
  • We encourage parents to work closely with us sharing information about their child's needs and progress.  The Nursery offers an 'open door policy' where you are welcome  to talk with staff at anytime; or you may prefer to make an appointment to talk with your child's key-person, SENCO or Manager in a private setting.
  • The Nursery keeps a learning journal for every child which includes observations, assessments, progress tracking sheets and individual learning plans, which enable us to monitor your child's progress and set the 'next steps' for their learning and development.  We always welcome parental contributions to your child's learning journal.
  • The Nursery provides daily feedback  to parents/carers at the end of each child's session at Nursery.
  • If your child has an Individual education plan these are reviewed with you every six weeks.
  • The Nursery holds two parents' evenings a year,  a written summary of your child's progress is discussed at these meetings and targets agreed;  we also provide ideas on how you can support your child at home.
  • The Nursery provides home-learning packs which you can borrow and use at home with your child. 
What support will there be for my child's/young person's overall well being?
  • The Nursery uses 'Individual health care plans' for children who have a medical condition.  We work with parents to complete these plans to ensure that your child's daily medical or care needs are met.
  • Prescribed medication can be administered by Nursery staff when a medication form has been completed and signed by the parent. If additional training is required to administer medication we will undertake this training as necessary.
  • The Nursery will always have a paediatric first aid trained member of staff on site.
  • The Nursery promotes positive behaviour and we will work with parents to plan a consistent approach to managing children's behaviour.  We will support children in managing their own feelings and behaviours and if required will seek support from outside agencies when parental consent has been given.

 

What specialist services and expertise are available at or accessed by the setting/school/college?
  • As a Nursery we will work closely with any external agencies that can provide support for your child, this may include the speech and language therapy service, Health visitors, Area inclusion officer, Portage and outreach workers. 
  • The Nursery SENCO can refer children, with parental consent, or sign-post parents to a range of specialists services within their local area.
  • Local children's centres offer a range of support for children and families that parents can access.

 

What training have the staff supporting children and young people with SEND had? Are any being trained currently?
  • All staff in the Nursery working directly with children with SEN or disabilities have a recognised Early Years Qualification or are working towards an Early Years Qualification. 
  • The SENCO has attended the 'SENCO induction course' and will be attending further courses that form part of Hampshire's Inclusion training programme.  The SENCO attends termly SENCO support groups to share good practice.
  •  Staff have received training relating to 'language and communication' and 'working with parents'
  • The Nursery encourages staff to continually up-date their skills and knowledge and to attend training courses that will help us to support children and families within our Nursery to ensure that we are meeting specific individual needs. 
How will my child/young person be included in activities outside this classroom including school trips?
  • We aim for all children to be included in activities outside of the Nursery,  and to provide the necessary support to ensure this is achievable.  This may require raising ratios by providing one to one support,  parents may also be invited to attend the trip with their child.  Activities may need to be adapted to ensure that your child has access to the off-site activities provided.
  • A risk assessment will be carried out prior to any off-site activity to ensure that Health and Safety rules are not compromised. 
How accessible is the setting/school/college environment?
  • The Nursery is a one storey building with wheel chair access via ramps on entrance/exit doors.
  • The indoor areas are spacious with room for service users to move around safely.
  • There is access to the outdoor patio area which is accessible for wheel chair users  or those with mobility difficulties.  There is a cleared forest area and non-cleared forest area which is on an incline and has uneven ground.  This may pose challenges for wheel chair users or those with mobility difficulties; but we would endeavour to assist children in accessing these areas where possible.
  • Children's  resources and activities are at child height so the children can access them independently. 
How will the setting/school/college prepare and support my child/young person to join the setting/school/college or the next stage of education and life?
  • The Nursery requires all children to have a 'settling in period'.  This consists of a minimum of two settling in sessions before they begin attending  Nursery.    During this visit you and your child will meet their allocated key-person, other staff and children.  Your child's key person will spend time with you discussing  your child's needs to help them plan for your  child's smooth transition into Nursery.  The second settling in session is an opportunity for your child to spend time in the Nursery without you being there
  • The Nursery can be flexible in extending the settling in period for your child.  We can gradually extend the amount of time your child spends at Nursery until they feel comfortable staying for their whole session.
  • Your child's key person will help your child settle into Nursery, providing the link between home and Nursery.
  • The Nursery will provide a transition report  that will summarise your child's development and progress, this will be given to your child's new Nursery or school. 
  • The Nursery may facilitate transition meetings with parents, the SENCO, teachers at the new Nursery or school and other agencies involved in the care and education of your child.
  • The Nursery helps to prepare  your child for school by introducing school uniforms for the children to wear in role play, talking about their days at school and inviting Year R teachers to visit our Nursery to talk about what the children can expect when they start school. 
How are the setting's/school's/college's resources allocated and matched to children's/young people's special educational needs?
  • Your child's individual needs will be assessed and the Nursery's resources will then be allocated to support your child.
  • Using the funding which is available to us, the Nursery strives to ensure that all children with Special Educational Needs are provided with the support and resources needed to enable them to access the Nursery environment and make progress.
  • We will actively seek supplementary funding for those children who require extra support and resources. 
How is the decision made about what type and how much support my child/young person will receive?
  • The key-person, parents, SENCO , manager and any outside agencies who may be involved in your child's care will work together to identify what type of support would be appropriate to meet your child's needs.  This would be based on our observations and assessments of your child's  individual needs and requirements. 
How are parents involved in the setting/school/college? How can I be involved?
  • We encourage parents to be involved in our Nursery and to contribute their ideas and expertise to assist the continuous  development of the Nursery.
  • An annual parental questionnaire is given out to encourage feedback on the service we provide.
  • We invite parents and family members to visit the Nursery to share special Nursery events with their children e.g. Christmas sing-along,  arts and craft sessions, school leavers events.
  • The Nursery has a closed group Facebook page that keeps parents informed about activities and events that will be taking place at the Nursery.
  • We have two parents evenings a year where parents can talk about their child's progress with their key person.
  • Parents receive daily feedback at the end of their child's Nursery session.
  • The Nursery has an 'open door policy' if parents need to talk to a member of staff .
