- How will early years setting/school/college staff support my child/young person?
We have a special educational needs co-ordinator and a special educational policy in operation. The full time staff will be involved in the children’s development. Constant reviews of individual educational plans would be undertaken along with the resources available. We would continually observe the children and work with services for young children, area inclusion co-ordinators and other professionals. Our special educational needs co-ordinator attends special educational needs support groups and cascades back her learning to the rest of the team. The SENCO would undertake a process of referral in the event of a concern and a child of concern form would be completed. Parents will be kept informed of any concerns and work we are subsequently doing to enhance the development of their child.
- How will the curriculum be matched to my child's/young person's needs?
To match your child’s needs individual educational plans would be put in place, learning journeys would be completed using observations, assessment and planning. Every child is unique and would have an individual keyperson assigned to them who would undertake the learning process referring to the Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum. Individual Educational Plans will be tailored to the child’s needs and will be reviewed regularly in order to ensure that the IEP is still relevant to the child’s developmental needs.
- How will both you and I know how my child/young person is doing and how will you help me to support my child's/young person's learning?
We operate an open door policy where staff are available for discussion at any time. Regular staff meetings are held to plan and discuss individual children’s needs. We encourage links from home via the use of a home/school book and a daily diary. We work alongside other agencies who may already be involved to support children and parents. We advise parents about Childrens Centres and the facilities that they provide. Photographic evidence is collected of your child’s development through their time at pre-school. Termly parents evenings are offered to discuss your child’s development and weekly updates are sent to parents containing dates of forthcoming events
- What support will there be for my child's/young person's overall well being?
We administer medicines with parental consent. All staff give support to children with behaviour difficulties and we have policies in place to support SEN, Behaviour and Inclusion. We work with other agencies such as speech and language therapists to ensure appropriate support is given. Staff discuss feelings and emotions during the session and show and tell time helps to develop positive language, social skills and builds self-confidence.
- What specialist services and expertise are available at or accessed by the setting/school/college?
All staff are first aid trained and have accessed safeguarding training. The supervisors have achieved a Foundation degree and three members of staff are qualified at level 3. Our staff have a wealth of experience and have worked together as part of a team for the last ten years. The SENCO attends networking meetings to keep on top of current policies and procedures. Cuckoo Meadow Preschool has policies and procedures in place to support the running of the preschool and to suppot the safety and well being of the children and staff
- What training have the staff supporting children and young people with SEND had? Are any being trained currently?
Both supervisors have a foundation degree in early childhood studies and the rest of the staff in the setting are qualified to level 3. All staff are first aid and safeguarding training. Training is cascaded from the SENC to the rest of the staff. Visual timetables are in place to suppot transitions. All activities are adapted to meet individual children’s needs.
- How will my child/young person be included in activities outside this classroom including school trips?
>The keyperson will support the child with parental consent and the policies and procedures would be adhered to ensuring inclusion.
- How accessible is the setting/school/college environment?
The outdoor area is fully enclosed and is spacious. We are creative with our outdoor play and all children are encouraged to take part. Positive images are displayed throughout the preschool in the form of photographs. A visual timetable is displayed within the preschool. Throughout the course of the session there are predictable transitions such as cafe time, lunch time, show and tell and story time. Inside the pre-school there is a disabled toilet.
- How will the setting/school/college prepare and support my child/young person to join the setting/school/college or the next stage of education and life?
Cuckoo Meadow Preschool invite new children to an induction day where parents have the opportunity to meet their keyperson and other parents. We offer an opportunity to stay and play tailored to the child’s needs. Separation is handled sensitively and again tailored to each individual child. Transitions into school would be supported by staff
- How are the setting's/school's/college's resources allocated and matched to children's/young people's special educational needs?
Cuckoo Meadow Preschool accesses a local children’s resource centre where inclusion equipment can be borrowed on a long term loan helping to meet the individual needs of each child. Should it be required SEN funding can be allocated to your child where appropriate. A meeting with parents and staff would be held to discuss how the funding and resources would benefit your child’s needs.
- How is the decision made about what type and how much support my child/young person will receive?
An IEP is written for the child with parental input. Achievable goals are set and this is reviewed termly by the child’s keyperson who would be responsible for observing, recording and supporting progress. This recognises that development is fluid and that an IEP is only relevant if regularly reviewed and altered to fit with the child’s current developmental needs.
- How are parents involved in the setting/school/college? How can I be involved?
We are a parent committee run group where parents are involved in the decision making which includes writing policies and reviewing them. We have an open door policy and a parent/carer rota where parents are invited in to stay and play. Coffee mornings are held to encourage friendship forming. Special events are held to encourage other members of the family to become involved. We have a parent comment book and we send a weekly parent mail via email where parents are updated on the day to day running of the group. At the beginning and end of each session there is time for parents to share information with their keyperson.
