How will early years setting/school/college staff support my child/young person?

At Yateley Community Preschool a child’s key person will oversee and plans a child’s educational programme and needs alongside all staff and support from SENCO, BECO and manager. The key person, SENCO with parental input write an IEP – Individual Educational Plan. Our SENCO in conjunction with key person would co-ordinate our provision for a child with SEND, particularly at Early Years. Yateley Community Preschool is a community group run by our parents, we have a management committee who would be made aware of any SEND in case as a group we need to support a family financially eg.. if a child needs a one to one support, Preschool would help to fund due to local council contribution not covering the total cost. Any SEND disclosed to the management committee would be confidential. At Yateley Community Preschool we are constantly reflecting our practice to make sure all children are included and their needs are met and regularly reviewed. We are an Ofsted Outstanding Preschool. Yateley Community Preschool has used an Area INCO service for children and she has praised our efficiency, professionalism and good administration of SEND. If a child started at Yateley Community Preschool and we had any concerns during the settling in period the key person and SENCO would discuss their observations with the parents/carers and if parents were in agreement we would fill out an initial concern form (A child of concern form) which would be sent to the Area Inco requesting support.

How will the curriculum be matched to my child's/young person's needs?

Every child at Yateley Community Preschool has an allocated key person who keeps a record (Learning Journey) for their key child which covers their development and interests. The key person carries out observations on their key children in all areas of learning and characteristics of learning and monitors their progress and development. These observations are used to inform future planning / next steps. The OAP cycle (Observation and planning cycle) and interests are used to help complete an IEP (Individual Educational Plan) if needed. Before the key person completes an IEP they collect information about a child’s strengths and difficulties, vary teaching strategies, differentiate the curriculum and seek to provide special equipment from outside agencies and discuss with parents / carers. Each child will be looked at as an individual and a curriculum tailored to that child’s needs.

How will both you and I know how my child/young person is doing and how will you help me to support my child's/young person's learning?

If needs have been identified and an IEP completed it will show regular review dates to discuss future targets and whether these have been achieved. It will provide the opportunity to discuss future targets or next steps with parents / carers and shared with other carers eg.. child minders, shared Preschool provision. The key person as they complete the child’s Learning Journey they track progress in the development stages so at a glance can see if a child development is emerging, expected or exceeding in each 7 areas of learning. Parents are welcome to discuss their child with the key person each session or if they are a working parent, contact by phone or email, or a home link book. Each term the Learning Journey is sent home showing a child’s development and interests, this form has a section for home learning where the key person suggests an activity or maybe some advice to carry out at home. Parents through our notice board can access local training courses and events being held. We advertise the local Children’s centres that offer help and advice for eg on speech and language. Yateley Community Preschool has a website, uses Facebook, weekly emails and staff newsletter to inform parents of any adhoc training that becomes available. At our annual general meeting we have covered the importance of Nursery Rhymes, a talk on mark making, introduction to the Early Years Foundation Stage, Characteristics of Learning and Healthy Eating.

What support will there be for my child's/young person's overall well being?

Yateley Community Preschool has nine well qualified and caring staff who work well as a team and offer care and attention to all children and families. All staff are first aid trained and have trained in the past for delivery of Epipen, nebulizer and Rectal Diazepam, so as needs arise we will seek professional training. Our setting does daily risk assessments on the building and garden area to keep children safe and we have policies on our website, paper copy available, policies are on risk assessment, health and safety, medicines, first aid, etc… If a child has medicine administered during a session then it is written in the medicine book, stating time and dosage and signed by two staff and parents sign at the end of the day / session. If your child has an accident such as falling over and bumping their head then an accident form is completed and a head injury letter given to parent / carer at the end of the day to sign. Yateley Community Preschool has a BECO – Behaviour Co-ordinator who works with the SENCO, staff and parents to support behaviour issues. We seek help and advice from the Area Inco or Portage if needed. Parents are kept informed of any suggested strategies so that we can support each other. Our SENCO has completed Thomas training and along with the manager Makaton training which we are introducing a few symbols a week.

What specialist services and expertise are available at or accessed by the setting/school/college?

The Area Inco provides support and advice as to specialist services available to us. The SENCO is able to refer children direct to Speech and Language therapy at Aldershot Centre for Health with permission from parents / carer. The SENCO is also able to refer children to Portage, the services of the local Children’s Centre and Health Visitor and has a folder with leaflets about such services as anaphylaxis, Cerebral Palsy, Dyslexia, ADHD, Autism, Hearing and Visual impairment, glue ear, gifted children, Downs Syndrome, Epilepsy, Meningitis, Dyspraxia, Makaton, Asthma, Haemophilia, Eczema etc…Staff and SENCO work closely with outside agencies and professionals as and when needed and training would be sought.

What training have the staff supporting children and young people with SEND had? Are any being trained currently?

Staff have had training for Paediatric First Aid, Rectal Diazepam, Epipen, Nebulizer and inhalers as well as basic Makaton training and our SENCO has had Thomas training for children on the Autistic spectrum. Training will be sought as and when needed.

How will my child/young person be included in activities outside this classroom including school trips?

>We have a policy on the Supervision of children on outings and visits. Parents are informed by letter, email, Facebook or website of any impending trips organized. A risk assessment is carried out for all outings making sure the outing is inclusive to each individual child.

How accessible is the setting/school/college environment?

Yateley Community Preschool is accessed by a ramp to the main entrance, the garden can be accessed via the main entrance ramp with a member of staff. We have an accessible toilet and facilities for changing nappies. At Yateley Community Preschool we engage the services of EMTAS if we are unable to communicate with parents / carers if English is not their first language. We purchased a mobile phone so that we could liaise with deaf parents to let them know if their child was ill and vice versa . We have some visual Makaton signs around the room and teach simple Makaton to the children. At YCP we have an SEN budget and have applied for grants for equipment and resources and one to one support for a child.

How will the setting/school/college prepare and support my child/young person to join the setting/school/college or the next stage of education and life?

After a child is offered a place at Yateley Community Preschool the family are invited to a welcome afternoon to get to know the family and prepare paperwork on their child, including the children’s likes and dislikes, settling in process, allergies, special requirements. This ia an opportunity to meet the key person to discuss the children’s needs, engage with them and observe the children in the setting. They are given an All About Me booklet to complete to help the key person have an over view of the child as a base line for when they start and to use as a developmental PLOD (Possible Lines of Development). The parent / carer also fills out a transition from home to Preschool form giving information of any concerns about starting, whether it is their first experience etc… If the child moves to a different setting / school or is shared with another setting the key person will fill out a progress development report or transition form with an over view of the seven areas of learning. Where possible we would encourage visits to the new setting, our reports include children’s interests and Characteristics of Effective Learning. For a child with SEND or particular concerns or vulnerabilities we would set up a transition meeting for all people concerned to share details on how we have been supporting the child.

How are the setting's/school's/college's resources allocated and matched to children's/young people's special educational needs?

We hold an annual budget meeting where we allocate a particular amount to cover resources that might be needed for a child with SEND. Additional funds would be accessed through Hampshire County Council, SEN funding / Grant, one to one funding as and when it is needed and approved. We are a parent run group with a Committee who would apply for any relevant grants for resources etc… As a group we regularly fund raise for resources too.

How is the decision made about what type and how much support my child/young person will receive?

If there is an identified need before a child starts, a meeting will be set up before their start date with parents, key person and SENCO and any other relevant professionals involved. At that meeting transition would be discussed and what support needed would be put in place. Funding for what ever equipment or one to one etc… would be applied for before a child starts. If once a child starts at Yateley Community Preschool and we feel there is a need for support the SENCO, key person and parent / carer would meet to discuss the type of support required. An IEP would be developed by the key person and SENCO and shared with parents and carers. This would be regularly reviewed. And if we felt further support or funding was needed we would call on the services of our Area Inco with permission from the parents / carer. Through formal and informal observations and input from parents we would be able to judge if the support level was correct and has had an input.

How are parents involved in the setting/school/college? How can I be involved?

Yateley Community Preschool is a charity and a Community group run by the parents of the children who attend. Parents can be involved as much or as little as they want. We hold an AGM in September annually where parents / carers can be voted onto the Committee to help with the decision making of the Preschool. Those who do not want to give up too much of their time often volunteer to clean toys and tea towels or help out at our fund raising events etc.. Parents can be involved by offering suggestions for their children’s next steps and planning for future development. If they have a particular vocation such as being a nurse, police officer, fire person etc… or like cooking we invite them in to help out by sharing their experiences with us. We invite parents to be involved with our risk assessments and stay and play sessions.
