What does your service do?

We can provide hearing assessments and monitor hearing for all children. We implement suitable management plans in cases of hearing loss, and arrange onward referral to Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) when appropriate. We can also arrange hearing aid management if needed.

Who does your service provide for?

A referral from a medical professional is needed. If you have any concerns about your child’s hearing please ask their GP or paediatrician to make a referral for a hearing test. It is important to check the hearing of children with special needs as even a mild hearing loss can have an impact on the development of speech, attention, behaviour and early literacy skills.

How can I start using the service?

A referral from a medical professional is needed. If you have any concerns about your child’s hearing please ask their GP or paediatrician to make a referral for a hearing test. It is important to check the hearing of children with special needs as even a mild hearing loss can have an impact on the development of speech, attention, behaviour and early literacy skills.

Where is it located and what areas does it cover?

The appointments take place at various locations: Eastleigh, Winchester, Andover, Basingstoke and Borden. Each location has different facilities and so not all locations may be available depending on the age and needs of your child. We try to offer appointments at the clinic closest to your home. However, you may be offered an appointment elsewhere in order to prevent a long wait. If you would like your appointment to be rescheduled to a more convenient location, please contact us using the telephone number on your appointment letter.

How are decisions made about who can use your service?

We require a referral from a medical professional such as a GP, paediatrician, or health visitor. We aim to see all new referrals within about 6 weeks.

How do you communicate with service users and how are they involved in decision making?

We routinely provide parents with copies of all Audiology reports relating to their child. We try to involve families in the decision making process through conversation at appointments.

Is your service fully accessible?

Please let us know if you or your child requires special support such as wheelchair access or a translator.

What training are the staff supporting children and young people with SEN and Disabilities had or are having?

Professional training is provided by courses at several universities and through the British Society of Audiology.

How will I know my child is safe?

You, or a family representative, will be present with your child throughout their appointment. The room must be quiet for the hearing test. If your child has young brothers or sisters, it would be helpful if you could arrange care for them so that they do not have to attend the clinic.

How are parents involved in the setting/school/college? How can I be involved?

Please contact the Audiology office (01962 824437) for queries about the local service. If you are interested in the methods that can be used for hearing assessment, please look at the resources and leaflet available through the NDCS website (http://www.ndcs.org.uk).
