How will early years setting/school/college staff support my child/young person?

The SENCo/BECo is familiar with the SEN Code of Practice and it is their role to liaise with you, the Key Person and any outside Specialists or Agencies e.g. Area Inclusion Co-ordinator, Speech and Language Therapy, Portage, Occupational Therapy, Physio Therapy and Educational Psychology. This is in order to co-ordinate support to meet your child’s needs whilst they are attending Whiteley Pre-School. They will monitor records regarding your child’s development and progress. Based on need, they may work 1 to 1 with your child or in small groups, support staff and attend SEN support groups in order to keep up with latest legislation or new strategies. They may request advice/support from the Area Inclusion Co-ordinator regarding your child, and would do this by completing an Initial Concerns Form, which requires your consent, a meeting would then be arranged for them to come into the pre-school to observe your child then discuss their findings with you. The SENCo/BECo will write and review Individual Education or Behaviour Plans, in conjunction with you and if needed liase with any outside Specialists or Agencies so that we are all working on the same targets/goals. Your child’s key person will pay a major role with supporting your child. They will form an attachment to your child and be your child’s main carer. The key person will be there to comfort your child, get to know their interests, their style of learning and provide all other support and play opportunities for your child.

How will the curriculum be matched to my child's/young person's needs?

The Early Years Foundation Stage Curriculum (EYFS) sets the standards that all early years providers must meet, to ensure that children learn and develop well. Every child is different therefore the key person will make observations and assessments on your child. They will consider the level your child is currently at, ensuring your child’s interests are taken into consideration and that all areas of development are covered. The activities will be designed to use your child’s current knowledge and abilities, build on it and introduce next steps. Any group activities and adult support can be differentiated to suit the child’s level of development. The SENCo/BECo will also support the key person in providing relevant activities to meet your child’s particular needs and work on next steps, by means of an Individual Education or Behaviour Plan.

How will both you and I know how my child/young person is doing and how will you help me to support my child's/young person's learning?

Your child’s key person or co-worker will be available each session for a brief chat, if a longer a more private conversation needs to take place then an appointment can be made by either you or the key person. The SENCo/BECo and the Manager are also available to talk at anytime. A home-link book can be set up where required. Once a term a parent consultation will take place, this is an opportunity for you to sit down with your child’s key person and go through your child’s Learning Journey together, to discuss concerns and progress, and contribute to next steps/ or adapt current targets. Specialists and Agencies working with your child may also visit the pre-school to observe and assess your child’s progress. Individual Education Plans or Behaviour Plans will be reviewed with you. Parents are their child’s first educator and you are encouraged to support your child’s learning at home, the pre-school holds parent workshops which are run by our Manager, past topics have included storytelling, mark making, messy play and developing reading skills. We also run Stay and Play sessions, fund raising events and celebration days which parents are invited to e.g. Mother’s Day Breakfast, Grandparents Tea, Easter Egg Hunt, Christmas Show and sponsored bike ride, there is also a regular newsletters, which contain dates for your diaries, recipes and an insight into what has been happening at the Pre-School etc. Parents/carers are often required to help support on trips which take place further afield.

What support will there be for my child's/young person's overall well being?

A secure learning environment is provided which helps to nurture children and provides safe cosy areas for them to retreat to if they feel tired. Health and Safety is of paramount importance. We work to minimise hazards and risks so that children can thrive in a healthy and safe environment and encourage a healthy diet. Medicines are only given by a qualified first aider w;ith written consent. Two members of staff are present when medicines are given and this is recorded. All medicines are kept in a secure location. Where a child has a long term medical condition a health care plan will be put in place. Advice will be sort from medical professionals to determine whether training is required to administer certain medication or medical care. Staff are first aid trained, have the relevant safeguarding training and undergo a DBS check. Our SENCo works with staff and parents to support children with behavioural needs. Behaviour plans are put in place and outside specialists or agencies involved when required. We use various strategies and activities to support the child, e.g. reward charts, emotions/feelings cards, visual timetables, sand-timers, positive images, good role modelling, choice boards, stop/go cards and first/then cards. We operate a language group called Little Talkers, which develops use of language, builds confidence, turn taking and social interaction. Personal speech and language programmes set by the Speech and Language Therapy Service are implemented and basic Makaton is used.

What specialist services and expertise are available at or accessed by the setting/school/college?

Our SENCo/BECo has attended the following courses: SEN Induction, Positive Approaches To Challenging Behaviour, Moving and Handling, Beginners Makaton, Keep On Talking, Initial Safegaurding, Attachment training. Once a term our SENCo also attends SENCo Support meetings in order to keep up with new legislation, strategies and training. We have links with the Area Inclusion Co-ordinator Physiotherapy, Occupational Therapy, Educational Psychology, Portage, Specialist Advisory Teacher for Disabilities and Speech Language Therapy, staff may also undergo some specific medical training on an individual needs basis, e.g. administration of epipen. In order to support a child we are always happy to create new links with the relevant professionals.

What training have the staff supporting children and young people with SEND had? Are any being trained currently?

Staff have a wealth of knowledge and experience, staff qualifications can be viewed on the Whiteley Pre-School website at Staff also receive first aid and safeguarding training and can access up to twenty hours of additional training each year. Training based on specific needs is undertaken as the need arises.

How will my child/young person be included in activities outside this classroom including school trips?

>Activities, events and outings are adapted where necessary, taking into account specific needs. They are risk assessed to enable all children to access them safely. When on an outing we operate a lower staff to child ratio and invite parents/carers to help on trips further afield. Where 1 to 1 support is required we will provide this, in the unlikely event of us not being able to provide the support we would ask that you attend with your child.

How accessible is the setting/school/college environment?

We are a pack-away setting based in Whiteley Community Centre, which has a disability toilet and is fully wheelchair accessible. We operate two rooms, everyone is based in the Woodlands Room, acoustics in this large room are not ideal, it can become loud with its very high ceiling and wooden floor. Sweethills Room is smaller and is mainly used for messy or small group activities. Our garden is tarmacked and flat. Where specialist equipment is required guidance is sort from specialists. Any extremely large bulky equipment or equipment requiring attachment to a permanent fixture would require approval from the Community Centre Committee. Visual support used in the setting includes, a visual timetable, use of Makaton , signs, symbols, photographs, flash cards, choose boards, 1st/then cards, emotions cards and stop/go cards. The Ethnic Minority and Traveller Achievement Service (EMTAS) are available to support the setting and families who have English as an additional language. The setting endeavours to learn key words in the child’s home language/s and provide dual language books and cultural toys where possible. We welcome parents into the setting to share their customs and celebrations with us.

How will the setting/school/college prepare and support my child/young person to join the setting/school/college or the next stage of education and life?

When starting at Whiteley Pre-School we will, in consultation with you contact any specialists/ agencies to ensure the appropriate staff training and equipment are put in place for your child. Provide a transition book if required, provide flexible settling visits and assign you a key person. When transferring to a new setting we will provide school themed activities and resources e.g. uniforms to dress up in, transition books showing the new setting and teachers. In addition to the visits you and your child will have to the new setting, your child will also visit with their key person in a small group and their new teacher will endeavour to visit your child at the pre-school. We will hold a transition meeting with the new setting, you and any agencies/ specialists will be invited to attend. The meeting is an opportunity to share information about your child and agreed what needs to put in place for your child e.g. equipment, one to one support, extra transition visits.

How are the setting's/school's/college's resources allocated and matched to children's/young people's special educational needs?

We will work in conjunction with you and the relevant specialists/agencies to discuss the most appropriate use for the special educational needs funding. Generally funding is used to provide one to one support or buy specific resources for your child.

How is the decision made about what type and how much support my child/young person will receive?

Following observations and assessments made by your child’s key person, the SENCo and outside agencies/specialists, we will meet with you to discuss what type of support is needed and how much support will be given based on your child’s needs. We will then agree targets and write an Individual Education or Behaviour Plan for your child, which we will review regularly, during the review we will discuss the plans impact, what has worked/not worked and agree new targets.

How are parents involved in the setting/school/college? How can I be involved?

The pre-school is run by an elected committee of parents/carers which ensures that the major decision making is in the hands of the parents/carers. The committee are elected at the Annual General Meeting and are always happy to welcome new members. You can become a volunteer within the setting or just stay and play for a while to see what your child gets up to. The children always enjoy having parents or other family members come in to share their work roles or interests with us, e.g. policeman, dentist, gardening, musical instruments, and cookery. We hold various events, which we encourage you to attend and evaluate. We ask you to contribute to your child’s learning journey and attend parent consultations once a term and we have a parents comments box.
