- How does the setting/school/college know if children/young people need extra help and what should I do if I think my child/young person may have special educational needs?
Each child has next steps set for them. These are achieved through planning and observations. Each child’s learning is tracked so that the Key Worker is able to discuss any concerns with the parents and speak to our settings SENCO for support and if necessary, referrals to outside agencies.
- How will early years setting/school/college staff support my child/young person?
Each child’s allocated a Key Worker and they will plan activities around your child’s interests through “Early Years Foundation Stage” to develop and meet their individual needs.
- How will the curriculum be matched to my child's/young person's needs?
Each child is an individual and their progress is recorded using our online application. Individual Educational Plans (IEP) are written to support learning at home as well as in our setting.
- How will both you and I know how my child/young person is doing and how will you help me to support my child's/young person's learning?
We record each child’s observations using our online learning journey and at the end of each term we track where they are to see that they are meeting their targets. If there are any causes for concerns the child’s Key Worker will consult with the parents and our SENCO to formulate a planned strategy to involve relevant outside agencies and introduce an Individual Educational Plan (IEP). All outside agencies (Health Visitors, Educational Psychologists, Occupational Therapists, Portage, Speech and Language and assigned Social Workers) are able to visit your child at the setting.
- What support will there be for my child's/young person's overall well being?
We value our inclusive setting and team who look after your child to encourage and promote their value and self-esteem. Each child’s Key Worker is responsible for their daily well-being along with support from our SENCO. All our staff are trained in First Aid. Where necessary Behaviour plans are put in place.
- What specialist services and expertise are avaliable at or accessed by the setting/school/college?
At our Nursery we have a qualified SENCO who works closely with outside agencies. Where necessary we can refer you to these agencies once permission is sought. These agencies include: Speech & Language and Portage. Where English is a second language we can access the EMTAS (Ethnic minority traveller achievement service).
- What training have the staff supporting children and young people with SEND had? Are any being trained currently?
Our SENCO is fully trained and attends regular briefings. We have staff members in each room that are Makaton trained. Each week we introduce a new sign to teach the children altogether supporting inclusion. All our staff are First Aid trained. Our SENCO is able to relay new strategies or updates at our staff meetings- Supervisor meetings, whole staff meetings and individual room meetings.
- How will my child/young person be included in activities outside this classroom including school trips?
All children are able to participate in all our outings. A risk assessment is conducted before to ensure everyone’s “Health & Safety” at all times. As part of the Early Years Curriculum all children are included. We work closely with each individual child’s parents to make this happen.
- How accessible is the setting/school/college enviroment?
Our nursery is wheelchair accessible and we have full access to our outdoor environment. There is at least one staff member per room Makaton trained and each week we introduce a new sign to teach all children in their respective rooms.
- How will the setting/school/college prepare and support my child/young person to join the setting/school/college or the next stage of education and life?
Before any child starts at our setting we offer five free settling-in sessions for your child to get to know the room, staff , children and a Key Worker will be allocated to take care of your child’s day to day needs. When a child is moving on to school, we will arrange a transition meeting with the parents, SENCO, school, key worker and any other agencies to help this go smoothly.
- How are the setting's/school's/college's resources allocated and matched to children's/young people's special educational needs?
Additional funding can be sought to access resources, specialist equipment or to enable one to one support. Our SENCO along with the child’s Key Worker will form a strategy to meet the individual child’s needs.
- How is the decision made about what type and how much support my child/young person will receive?
Our SENCO, your child’s Key worker and Parents will through discussion devise the most appropriate plan to meet the individual child’s needs. This will also be formulated from support through outside agencies involved in the plan. The child’s Individual Educational Plan (IEP) will be reviewed and actions updated to show progress and to implement a new plan.
- How are parents involved in the setting/school/college? How can I be involved?
We encourage all parents to take an active part in their child’s time at nursery. This includes events; Activity afternoons, Fayres, Parent Consults, using our Online Application to share what their child has been doing at home to extend their learning, IEP’S as well as sharing stories, skills and bringing in pets from home.
