Windward Day Service

Offering services to:
  • Adults 19-25
  • Young people 16-18

We are very proud to be a forward-thinking organisation that strives for excellence, providing day opportunities to people over 16 with autism and learning disabilities. Our staff are highly qualified, trained with many years of experience. Windward opened in 2002 as our original service. we are part of Windward Day Service which was established in 2002. We have 4 further service: Spiral Blue (Ringwood), Thrive (Chandlers Ford) and Cheers (New Milton) and Helix (Verwood) based over Hampshire and the New Forest.

Every day we run activities on-site and accessing the local community helping to develop a variety of learning, sporting and leisure, creative and independent skills. We are close to the centre of Ringwood and we walk into town for activities. We want you to be involved in the development of this centre so we hold regular committee meetings so you can have your say. We want to support you in the things you want to do – if you have an idea we will give it a go! We offer an award incentive scheme called Citizen Step-Up which encourages you try new experiences, offer a service and try a new skill and then we hold an award evening to celebrate your achievements.

We run regular Social Evenings, outings and holidays to further expand our range of social and independence-building opportunities. We also strive to work with a personal centred approach - ensuring to work with you and your parents or carers to best support you whilst you're with us, we also offer a key worker scheme as well as individual support plan to make sure we understand your needs.

What does your service do?

We support people to access many activities both inside and throughout our community. We are aware of the need to be physically healthy so provide sporting opportunities through the week including swimming, football, cricket, bowling, sailing etc. We also have a focus on independent living skills so encourage people to develop their cooking and money skills. Social relationships are key with the service we provide and by using group activities, such as drama, art, film-making and music, we help people to develop and maintain friendships. We welcome new challenges and ideas, and are always keen to hear service users opinions. Our last survey told us that over 90% of people feel that we support them really well. Our support ratio is usually 4:1. we can offer higher support if needed- please have a chat with us about this. We have regular social evenings and offer very varied holidays (skiing, Butlins, cruises etc). All of which can be, in part, subsidised by our own Windward Foundation. Our service user committee meets every two months and we discuss our activities, plans and staff. Our staff are trained in safeguarding, Mental Capacity Act, Makaton, moving and positioning, positive behaviour strategies, medication administration, first aid and food hygiene.

Who does your service provide for?

You can be referred by your care manager/social worker/community nurse, or if you receive direct payments or are self funding you can contact us directly. We offer free taster sessions and will do everything we can to ensure you have the start you need.

How can I start using the service?

You can be referred by your care manager/social worker/community nurse, or if you receive direct payments or are self funding you can contact us directly. We offer free taster sessions and will do everything we can to ensure you have the start you need.

Where is it located and what areas does it cover?

We are located in Netley Marsh near Totton. We use our nearby community and meet up with friends in our other services and our service users live all over the New Forest and some people come from Southampton.

How are decisions made about who can use your service?

We are an independent organisation and so make our own decisions. We have been providing day services for 18 years- and have had very few times when we have been unable to work with someone.

How do you communicate with service users and how are they involved in decision making?

We hold regular service user committee meetings. The people who use our service can tell us what is working well, suggest activities, provide feedback about staff and talk together about how we can all move our service forward. We hold annual reviews - service users decide who to invite. This provides everyone with an opportunity to set goals and make suggestions for the future.

Is your service fully accessible?

We aim to be a fully accessible service. Current services users include those who have a visual impairment, hearing impairment, wheelchair users and people with complex communication needs. We are all trained in the use of makaton. Our person centred approach means that if you have a need and we require training to meet it- we will do so.

What training are the staff supporting children and young people with SEN and Disabilities had or are having?

All staff have been DBS (CRB) checked and have training in Safeguarding Vulnerable Adults, the Mental Capacity Act, First Aid, Food Hygiene, Medication Administration, Administration of Buccal Midazolam, Moving and Positioning and some staff have had specific training in Positive Behavioural Approaches and Active Support Training etc.

How will I know my child is safe?

We have an open line of communication between our service users and anyone else involved in their care. We have an open door policy which means anyone can call in at anytime without an appointment. All our service users have detailed risk assessments and we rarely work on a lone basis. We liaise frequently with adult services. See training above.

How are parents involved in the setting/school/college? How can I be involved?

Fran Moody is our co-ordinator here at Windward. If she is not available you can talk with Becky, Sally or Jemma on the same number (02380 860005).
