How will early years setting/school/college staff support my child/young person?

Staff who have been trained in Sen , will take the lead with the children with disabilities and become their Key Person. Staff at our nursery will always introduce themselves as your child’s key Person, and will explain to you their plans to do with your child’s care and support plus their next steps. The Key Person will work with your child each time they attend our nursery, working either on a one-to-one basis or small group time activities. After a few weeks that staff member will ensure that they complete an IEP(individual educational plan), giving your child suitable targeted achievements to do as well as marking down achieved goals that they may have already reached. If at all their Key Person is away on holiday, one of the other Sen trained staff will then take over the role so your child will continue with their progress.

How will the curriculum be matched to my child's/young person's needs?

All children in Ann’s Wombles Nursery have Learning Journeys, this will also be applied to children with Sen making sure that they include their IEP’S. This means we will work with your child; ensuring that they have achievable targets set and can reach their set goals during their time. Staff will carry out regular observations on your child, during their activities enabling them to share this with you in their learning journeys so you will be able to sit and share this with your child at home as well as bringing in your own observation that you may have recoded at home in your child learning. These provide you with opportunities to join in with their learning, and record your views on your child’s progress during their time at nursery. Each child at Ann’s Wombles Nursery, is considered an individual and are not compared to any other child in the setting as all children develop at their own pace. So each child in our nursery is challenged to their own level and all have achievable goals set with their individual plans/ next steps.

How will both you and I know how my child/young person is doing and how will you help me to support my child's/young person's learning?

At our nursery we have provided each child in our care, a communication book. This book will hold information in it that includes what they have had to eat that day/ who they have played with/ where in the nursery that they have played. We have then left a small section at the bottom of each page, to allow the parents of children to record their views and any home observations that they have noticed which we can include in your child’s learning. If parents need to discuss any problems or concerns with staff, they can arrange to come in at a convenient time and talk to staff plus other support if needed such as Outreach worker or Portage. Parents/ carers are encouraged to have a say/ join in with their child’s education, allowing us to share your opinion while working with you and your child. Parents are encouraged to communicate with their Key Person during their child’s time in the nursery, allowing your child to feel comfortable with that person as they have watched you build a bond through communication about and joint observations that have been provided from home.

What support will there be for my child's/young person's overall well being?

Staffs supervise the children at all times, so you can feel comfortable knowing that your child is being watched at all times and never left at all. All medication is given/ administered by a member of staff who has been trained in paediatric first aid when parents/ careers have brought it in/ given permission and signed the relevant medication books in the nursery. Any child’s personal care needs, can be discussed with staff so that your child’s needs will be cared for correctly especially if there are particular procedures to care for their needs. For children with behaviour difficulties we have introduced ABBC charts, so we can monitor any incidents but also try to identify a trigger for the behaviour. All staff in the nursery are aware of our Sen policy and have received their own copy to read through, and review at their pace. We hold regular staff quizzes on the Sen policy to ensure that staffs are reviewing the policy that they have at home. All children in our nursery have regular input with their choice, of activities that they would like to take part in.

What specialist services and expertise are available at or accessed by the setting/school/college?

At Ann’s Wombles Nursery, we have 5 members of staff, which three of us have Sen training and will receive further training when needed or to help with changes in the education. Five members of staff have paediatric first aid training, and two main staff has attended a Makaton taster training session. We liaise with outside organisations, including Riverside outreach/ Portage/ Speech and Language therapists.

What training have the staff supporting children and young people with SEND had? Are any being trained currently?

The staffs at the nursery trained in Sen have the mandatory training, which they have received during their original course to qualify as child carers. Staff also attend courses in the evenings, and liaise with specialist organisations to keep up to date with any new information. Staffs have access for further training, in all areas of education and do this whenever the opportunities arise. Staff have a range of qualifications, which range from NVQ level 2 to NVQ level 4. Plus other areas in which they have attended courses, to gain further experience and knowledge.

How will my child/young person be included in activities outside this classroom including school trips?

>If there is a child in the setting with special educational needs they will still be included, in any little outings that are children go on. If it is a physical disability the setting can provide a pushchair or if preferred a parent/carer can supply one that they think will be more suitable for their child. On the outing the children will be supported by their Key Person and given extra support/ attention during the outing. We go on small trips around the local area and parents will be notified in advance, as they will be given a permission letter and notification via the child’s communication book.

How accessible is the setting/school/college environment?

At our nursery we have a portable ramp to allow access to the front of the building, and a permanent ramp at the rear of the building for access to the back garden. All staff has access to a small pack of visual aids for the children, and have three large signs in the main playroom which children learn how to use. Staff and children all take part in the sign of the week; this is displayed in the main playroom and is easy for children and staff to learn together. Two staff members have received a basic taster session in Makaton, and are looking to further their knowledge in this area if the opportunity arises.

How will the setting/school/college prepare and support my child/young person to join the setting/school/college or the next stage of education and life?

Before any child starts at our setting, they are offered a few “break in” sessions; this is so the child has a few visits to get used to staff and the other children, before being left on a permanent basis. If the child has attended a nursery previously, we ask that all records that were kept on the child, be sent over to us so that we can see where the child is developmentally and also get to know the child and how they like to play and what they like to do. We also liaise with other organisations that are associated with your child such as portage, outreach programmes etc.

How are the setting's/school's/college's resources allocated and matched to children's/young people's special educational needs?

At the setting we have a wide range of resources from soft toys to sensory toys, outdoor toys and sandpits. We receive government funding for any child with SEN, this allows us to buy any specialised equipment that the child may need such as, high chairs, extra sensory equipment etc. to make the child’s time at the setting enjoyable and educating.

How is the decision made about what type and how much support my child/young person will receive?

If a child has SEN, then the amount of support may vary, we encourage the children to be independent so we observe the children and help where we feel it is necessary. We will already have information on the child so will have knowledge of the child’s abilities, both physical and mental. We will also communicate with the parents, to decide on activities etc. to help the child develop.

How are parents involved in the setting/school/college? How can I be involved?

Parents are made aware of what happens during the day, through the communication book. This is a book that we have put together, to help inform parents of what their child has been up to, this is because we found that parents might not have the time to stop and discuss what has happened in the day as they may have to go to work or collect another child, this way the parents can look at the book at a time that is convenient for them, this is sent home with the child daily and there is also a section for parents to leave a comment if they would like. There is also a notice board outside the main nursery door, this will display what we are learning about and our topic of the month. There is also the opportunity to speak to staff if a parent wishes.
