- How does the setting/school/college know if children/young people need extra help and what should I do if I think my child/young person may have special educational needs?
As a nursery we observe all children’s learning and development, we plan in the moment and each child’s key person know their child with their individual needs and interests. We have regular conversations with parents along with parents’ evenings 3 times a year, after we have submitted a summative assessment to ensure we are supporting you as a family as well as the child.
During the settling in sessions, we spend time getting to know the children and families to know where extra support is needed.
- How will early years setting/school/college staff support my child/young person?
Each child is allocated a key person along with a buddy if their key person is ever off, the child’s key person will know about the child’s needs and interests who will also be supported by our Nursery SENCO.
The staff complete regular observations which are shared on Tapestry, along with a summative assessment. Parents have access to Tapestry and can share their development at home, their key person will also provide you with learning opportunities which can be done at home.
The staff will work alongside outside agencies where needed, especially our nursery SENCO.
- How will the curriculum be matched to my child's/young person's needs?
We plan in the moment by knowing each child’s interests and what they enjoy doing, we will also encourage children to participate with new and exciting learning opportunities that are happening within the nursery, which may widen their interests.
We use Birth to Five Matters as a guidance to support our team’s awareness and knowledge. Each child with specific progress needs would be given an (ISP) individual Learning Plan which is reviewed regularly within 6 to 8 weeks.
- How will both you and I know how my child/young person is doing and how will you help me to support my child's/young person's learning?
The staff complete regular observations which are shared on Tapestry, along with a summative assessment. Parents have access to Tapestry and can share their development at home, their key person will also provide you with learning opportunities which can be done at home.
- What support will there be for my child's/young person's overall well being?
We provide a home from home nursery environment which helps child feel comfortable and at ease when with us.
There is a professional positive relationship between the key person and child, this is to ensure the children feel safe and able to communicate freely. We talk regularly about feelings and how/ why we may feel that way, we express that it is ok to feel sad, but also give the reassurance that they may need.
- What specialist services and expertise are available at or accessed by the setting/school/college?
We have a variety of trained staff within our nursery environment, some staff we support here by putting them on further training; inhouse and council training.
We have introduced our own Nursery Curriculum called the foundations to the future where we share a variety of programmes to support each child individually.
We use Sing and Sign to support communication throughout the whole of our nursery from when they join to leave to go on their next adventure in school, to support children with their preparation for school, we use the Boogie Mites school readiness programme.
- What training have the staff supporting children and young people with SEND had? Are any being trained currently?
We have a variety of qualifications within the nursery,
More than half of the nursery are Paediatric First Aid Trained, Leadership have in-house and LA training to be designated safeguarding leads, all staff have relevant safeguarding training, We have an SENCO and inclusion coordinator for the nursery, Level 3: Special educational needs coordinators in early years settings, Introduction to Autism, ASD Awareness in the early years, Supporting children with English as an Additional language, Effective Teaching and Learning, Unclear speech, Sing and Sign training, Talking boxes workshops, Approaching Behaviour Management
- How will my child/young person be included in activities outside this classroom including school trips?
All children are included in all outing that we may go on, depending on each child’s needs we may have extra risk assessments in place to ensure the safety for all the children is being met.
- How accessible is the setting/school/college environment?
We are a fully accessible nursery on the ground floor including all children and adults.
- How will the setting/school/college prepare and support my child/young person to join the setting/school/college or the next stage of education and life?
We would complete an initial care assessment to ensure we can suitably care for the children with special educational needs.
We have a settling in period for children before they start within the nursery to ensure they are comfortable and safe in the nursery, this also gives the staff time to build a bond with the parents with them being present and not. We would provide Transition resources for parents to share with their child so that the child is supported and prepared.
- How are the setting's/school's/college's resources allocated and matched to children's/young people's special educational needs?
We have a variety of resources accessible for all children, if a child is in receipt of higher SEND funding we would use this to provide resources and enhance staffs training and knowledge specific for each child’s needs.
