We are a fully inclusive nursery that offer care and education for children 0-5 in the Petersfield area. We follow your child's interests and incorporate this into a flexible approach to suit the individual needs of the child.

How does the setting/school/college know if children/young people need extra help and what should I do if I think my child/young person may have special educational needs?

Our knowledge of your child starts at least a month or 2 before you start, when we invite you to the nursery to ask about the individual needs and interests of your child. We work closely with families throughout, meeting and using our Famly app to ensure your child reaches their true potential. Close relationships with parent/ carers mean that things are openly discussed as and when they happen.  

How will early years setting/school/college staff support my child/young person?

Our support is individual, staff and parents may attend courses together or individually. We form strong partnerships with outside agencies to ensure that we are able to give targeted help from the start to support best outcomes.

We evaluate the processes we undertake and adapt where necessary to provide the best care possible.

How will the curriculum be matched to my child's/young person's needs?

Children with Special Educational Needs have their own curriculum so that they benefit from a feeling of success. 

We have our own curriculum with a heavy emphasis on outdoor learning, we adapt this curriculum for those with Special Educational Needs. For example using additional resources to support joining in with a group or activities in a quiet space to support listening and attention. There is an ongoing process of constantly modifying the program to meet a child's learning outcomes. Individual Learning Plans are used to monitor and asses progress.

How will both you and I know how my child/young person is doing and how will you help me to support my child's/young person's learning?

We communicate through Famly, our nursery app, and ensure that we suggets things you could be doing at home to support your childs learning.

What support will there be for my child's/young person's overall well being?

A child's wellbeing is very important to The Little School. We are part of a programme called 'Happy Minds' which help nurseries and families create a culture of positive mental wellbeing. The programme helps build, a resilient, balanced and happy mind.

What specialist services and expertise are avaliable at or accessed by the setting/school/college?

We have a highly qualified SENCO who has a degree and many years of experience in many aspets of SEN.

Examples of how we help: 

A supervisor attended The Elizabeth Foundation with parent before the child started to see first hand what we could do to help. This also helped the parent form a bond with the supervisor/ key worker before starting.

Where a child required Makaton the parents and staff did a level 1 course together which we paid for.

How will my child/young person be included in activities outside this classroom including school trips?

Children are encourgaed to join in to the best of their abilities. We have large secure facilities with lots of room for different activities and abilities. 

We do not do trips. 

How accessible is the setting/school/college enviroment?

The nursery has wheelchair access. 

How will the setting/school/college prepare and support my child/young person to join the setting/school/college or the next stage of education and life?

Children with extra needs are invitied to start visits 2 months ahead of thier start date so that we may do a gradual integration to nursery. During this extra time, we can call on professionals and buy extra resources. 

In the last year of nursery we do a lot with parents and children in readiness for school, we offer a workshop for parents and prepare children for the next step. This will differ with each child as we help them to succeed in school physically, cognitively, socially and emotionally.

We invite teachers into our nursery so they can see the child with their peer group and give detailed reports about the child going into their care.

How are the setting's/school's/college's resources allocated and matched to children's/young people's special educational needs?

Resources are provided where needed after discussion with parents, key worker, SENCO and manager.

How are parents involved in the setting/school/college? How can I be involved?

The parents are very involved through regular meetings and the Famly app. They are invited to specialised training where appropriate. The app has a translation app to help if requird.
