How will early years setting/school/college staff support my child/young person?

At Compass House nursery we are a small family run setting that provide continuous care - supporting your child whilst they are away from home. This helps build confidence and positive self-esteem, helping your child to feel secure emotionally and physically. We share each child’s learning journeys with their parents or carers and communicate regularly and answer queries. We offer reassurance and inform the parents or carers of their child’s progress and ensure they are provided with all necessary information.

How will the curriculum be matched to my child's/young person's needs?

At Compass House Nursery we use the Statutory Framework for the Early Years and Foundation Stage. When planning activities for the children in our care we ensure we meet their interests and to support areas of their development and learning. For whole group activities we ensure that all activities will be differentiated to suit each child’s needs and that all children will be able to access it and it suits their stage of development. The level of supervision and support will also be differentiated based on the activity and the children involved and their needs. All of this ensures that every child is included and able to learn at their own level.

How will both you and I know how my child/young person is doing and how will you help me to support my child's/young person's learning?

We support all parents with their children’s needs and development and are available for you to come in to discuss anything you may need and offer support or practical advice. As we are a small family run nursery you will always see the same members of staff at the nursery and they will know your child and their individual needs. Every child at Compass House Nursery has a Learning Journey which we write observations and assessments in along with photographs and next steps that you could do at home to support their development. It is available for you to take home and we actively encourage you to contribute to it. If your child has additional needs and they have an Individual Education Plan (IEP) which will have targets on it to support your child’s development we will have meetings with you every six weeks to discuss progress made and the next steps we want to put onto the IEP. For children who are aged two we carry out a check as close to their second birthday as possible and a summative check if they start with us after they are two to discuss their progress and development

What support will there be for my child's/young person's overall well being?

The Nursery Manager and Deputy Manager are responsible for administering all medicines and if a child needs specialist support that we were not trained to provide we would ensure staff attended the relevant courses. The nursery has a policy for administering medicines which can be viewed in our policies and procedure nursery manual. Staff have relevant up to date first aid training and safeguarding training. Our safeguarding officer will also run in house training to update staff on any changes to safeguarding policies.

What specialist services and expertise are avaliable at or accessed by the setting/school/college?

The members of staff all have a wealth of experience and have undergone training up to level 3 and 4 Early Years Child Care and Education, Our Senco has a Foundation Stage Degree in Early Years Child Care and education.

What training have the staff supporting children and young people with SEND had? Are any being trained currently?

Training is undertaken to equip staff with the necessary knowledge as the need arises.

How will my child/young person be included in activities outside this classroom including school trips?

>All outings undertaken by the nursery are within our local area. We use parents and carers help as well as staff, with one adult to two children unless one to one is required. All areas visited are wheelchair/buggy accessible. The nursery has a Christmas play and all children and parents are invited; dietary information is held and implemented as needed.

How accessible is the setting/school/college enviroment?

Compass House nursery is wheelchair, buggy accessible. There is an accessible toilet with nappy changing facilities. Guidance from specialists would need to be sought if specialist equipment is required. English as a second language is catered for by the Ethnic Minorities and Travellers Achievement Service (EMTAS) http://www.hants.gov.uk/education/ema.htm who help with translation of information for parents. We provide: books, posters, displays and culturally appropriate items whenever possible.

How will the setting/school/college prepare and support my child/young person to join the setting/school/college or the next stage of education and life?

In consultation with yourself and other agencies involved with your child we will ensure that the appropriate equipment and care will be in place to make admission into the nursery as smooth as possible. Taster and settling-in sessions can be arranged where you and your child can visit the nursery to familiarise yourselves with the setting environment and staff prior to attending. We ask you to complete an “All about me” booklet which encourages you to share information with us about your child from home and provides us with a valuable insight into your child’s interests and development.

How are the setting's/school's/college's resources allocated and matched to children's/young people's special educational needs?

All children receive up to 15 hours per funded week of free early years education the term following their third birthday. Additional funding can be claimed for children with special educational needs (SEN). The funding is allocated to enable the child to achieve their full potential, possibly one to one support, specialist equipment, and appropriate toys to aid development or the creation of pictorial support aids .This is decided upon through consultation with all who are involved with the child at a “Team around the child”(TAC) meeting.

How is the decision made about what type and how much support my child/young person will receive?

If your child has already had a diagnosis then a TAC meeting will be held before he or she starts at the nursery. Decisions are made through consultation with all parties involved with the child’s care; this includes you, specialists, as well as the nursery Senco and staff. If your child has no diagnosis but you have expressed concerns or the Key Person has identified a problem at the 2 year check (which is carried out during the child’s first term) then a meeting will be held with you to explore ways of supporting your child. The SENCo draws up an Individual Education Plan (IEP) in collaboration with you and the Key Person; this is reviewed each half term. At the review the support will be assessed and moderated as appropriate. Monitoring of progress is carried out termly and recorded; to ensure that the curriculum is ensuring progress in all seven areas of the Early Years Foundation Stage.

How are parents involved in the setting/school/college? How can I be involved?

Parents will be continually consulted. As parents you will be kept up to date with your child's progress and care. We share photos and assessments with you about your child’s learning and development. We share daily what your child has been doing at nursery and we discuss any concerns that we may have.
