East Hants Young Carers

Offering services to:
  • Young parents
  • Secondary school aged children
  • Primary school aged children
  • Young people 16-18

We have the pleasure of running the East Hants Young Carers Programme.  Our Young Carers are aged 8-18 years old and have been referred to us to join the programme. We offer school and family support, club nights, trip in the holidays and so much more.

This is their time, to be themselves and to have fun.

We run 4 clubs each month in their different age groups, on a Thursday evening, just for young carers, they can access support and information as well as mixing with other young people in the similar situations. Each school holiday we try to run a trip, where we take the young carers out for some fun activities; things like, Staunton country park & jump factory, as well as low key days out to the lake  for an ice cream. We also provide support in the schools, through lunch clubs and 1-1 mentoring and take a whole family approach to our support.

Notes

The definition of a young carer is:

Children and young people under the age of 18 years old who provide regular and ongoing care and emotional support to a family member who is physically or mentally ill, disabled or misuses substances.

Most young people don't realise they area young carer,

'I didn’t consider myself a Young Carer as my parents look after my brother.  However, I did feel he was getting all of their attention, this made me have mixed emotions, I felt angry and guilty at the same time. Since being referred to YC’s, I  know my feelings are normal and I can now enjoy my own space and enjoy being at home too'.

Other notes

So what do we do during our sessions?  The young people will have the opportunity to mix with other young people across East Hants who are in a similar situation to themselves.  We play games, celebrate birthdays, hang out, shoot some pool, play on the xbox, get creative and generally have fun.  We make time and space to talk about whatever is important to them.  We share meals together and sometimes go on outings. We also offer an exploration programme for those new to the programme.
