“Tell me and I forget, show me and I remember, involve me and I understand” - this is our ethos here at Cherry Tree Preschool.

We have a very experienced team and SENco. We work closely with our parents as well as with any other outside agencies as required, making the child our focus. We work around what is best for each individual child, while nurturing and challenging them, making sure that they are ready for their next journey into school.

Our settling in process is very much catered to meet the individual child's needs and we work closely with the parents to ensure that their preschool experience is a positive and beneficial one.

How does the setting/school/college know if children/young people need extra help and what should I do if I think my child/young person may have special educational needs?

Each child has a key person who is trained to observe and interact with each child, thereby assessing their stage of development.  If there are any concerns i.e. the child is not at the expected stage of development, the key person will discuss this with the parent, getting their point of view.  The key person may also talk to the preschool Senco or manager in order to discuss the next steps that will put in place.

How will early years setting/school/college staff support my child/young person?

Cherry Tree staff and your child’s key person will liaise with you and any other outside agencies to see what may have already been put in place so that it can be continued in the setting. Cherry Tree Preschool has a named SENCO who will support your child’s key person to do this.

How will the curriculum be matched to my child's/young person's needs?

All children develop at different stages and their next steps are based on their individual progress, interests and observations that have been recorded by your child’s Key Person. We use Individual Education Plan’s (IEP) which have small steps or targets which would be based on your child’s development. These are decided on with you and reviewed every half term.

How will both you and I know how my child/young person is doing and how will you help me to support my child's/young person's learning?

Each child has a Key Person who is available to talk daily and will go through your child’s Learning Journey at least termly. To help you support your child’s learning you are welcome to spend some time in the pre-school to see how the setting is working with your child. In addition to this, your child’s Key Person may give you some activities and ideas to work on at home with your child. We would be able to give you information about other groups which you could take your child to and other activities that may be beneficial for your child.

What support will there be for my child's/young person's overall well being?

Your child will have a key person who will be your child’s main carer. They will see to their daily needs and the other members of staff are also there to help and support as they do with all the children in the setting. Your key person will be your main point of contact , but all members of staff are available to support all parents.

What specialist services and expertise are available at or accessed by the setting/school/college?

Cherry Tree Preschool has worked with agencies such as Portage, Speech and Language Therapists, Social workers & Health Visitors to give children who have Special Educational Needs or disabilities the best opportunities to learn and develop. The staff at Cherry Tree are all qualified to Level 3 or above. We have a named SENCO (Special Educational Needs Co-0rdinator) who has many years experience with a variety of different needs.

What training have the staff supporting children and young people with SEND had? Are any being trained currently?

Cherry Tree Preschool has a named SENCO, Lisa Fidler, who oversees any plans which are put into place for any child that needs extra support. The staff have had ‘Makaton’ training which is used in the setting. All staff are currently receiving ‘Good Autism Practice’ training.

How will my child/young person be included in activities outside this classroom including school trips?

All children would be included in any days out or trips that the pre-school has. Parents are invited to join their children on these trips.

How accessible is the setting/school/college environment?

Cherry Tree Preschool is situated in the Cheriton Recreation Ground which is accessed via a dirt track and grass.  There is a ramp to the main entrance and the setting is all in one room. We have toilets which are accessible from the room and changing facilities for those who are unable to use the toilets (for this we use a changing mat which is placed on the floor), there is also a disabled toilet. There are some steps up to the mud kitchen and a small step out to the playhouse. The play area has different levels and materials to walk on.

How will the setting/school/college prepare and support my child/young person to join the setting/school/college or the next stage of education and life?

Before your child starts at Cherry Tree Preschool, we would ask you to come in for at least 2 settling in sessions.  This allows us to spend time with you and your child gaining as much information as possible before your child starts and allows us to make any adaptations that may be necessary. If your child needs any more settling in sessions, we can arrange them at this time. We would also contact any other agencies, who may be working with your child, to gather any additional information to enable us to carry out any routines or strategies which your child is already familiar with or introduce any new ones.  We also have good links with the local schools to allow for a good transition where we can share any relevant information and facilitate visits before the child is due to start.

How are the setting's/school's/college's resources allocated and matched to children's/young people's special educational needs?

The Pre-School resources are used by all and are appropriate to the ages and stages of the children. Any additional funding which the setting may get is used to purchase resources or equipment which the individual may need to enhance their development. It may also be used to allow for the child to have additional small groups or one to one time with their key person or another member of staff.

How is the decision made about what type and how much support my child/young person will receive?

Cherry Tree Preschool works with the parents and other outside agencies to decide how much and what type of support the child needs within the setting.  We also allow the child time to settle and observe how they interact with the other children, staff, and the environment.  This all helps us to decide which strategies would work best for the child.

How are parents involved in the setting/school/college? How can I be involved?

We are a committee run preschool, so ALL parents are invited to play a part in the running of the preschool. Each child has a learning journal on Tapestry which we share with you at least half termly and it also allows you to share information about your child and family. This includes observations and photos of your child’s learning and development at Cherry Tree. We have an ‘open door’ policy and encourage parents to come and join us to help with activities such as baking, walks or stories.
