How will early years setting/school/college staff support my child/young person?

If it is agreed that your child needs additional support, our nursery SENCo will co-ordinate this. Your child’s Key Person will work with your child to ensure that progress is being made and an Individual Education Plan will be drawn up with your co-operation, and taking into account any guidance from any outside agencies. It is important that we are all working together on the same targets to ensure your child has as much support as possible. We will have regular meetings with you, some formal and many informal. We will discuss your child’s progress and their next steps. Parents are also invited in at any time an outside agency comes in to work with their child to ensure they get to see them to discuss progress and/or concerns. As stated before, we have an open door policy and encourage you to come and talk to us. The SENCo reports to the Deputy Manager and Director to inform them of the progress of any children with special educational needs and disabilities progress and any additional support/ resources they may need. We liaise with the outside agencies such as Portage and Occupational Therapists to obtain, where required, special equipment to help an individual, ensuring that they can take full advantage of the nursery environment. Additional funding may also be obtained to provide extra resource for a child, ensuring that they have the physical help and care to move around the nursery and take advantage of all the activities on offer.

How will the curriculum be matched to my child's/young person's needs?

Throughout the nursery we use the Statutory Framework for the Early Years and Foundation Stage. For more information on the EYFS please go to https://www.gov.uk/government/collections/early-years-foundation-stage When we plan activities for the children we plan for each individual child to ensure we are using their interests to support areas of their development. For whole group activities we ensure that all activities will be differentiated to suit each child’s needs and that all children will be able to access it and it will suit their stage of development. The level of supervision and support will also be differentiated based on the activity and the children involved and their needs. All of this ensures that every child is included and able to learn at their own level. Operating in this way means that even if your child is not working at the same level as their peers, they will have a learning programme that suits them.

How will both you and I know how my child/young person is doing and how will you help me to support my child's/young person's learning?

We are completely open to support all parents with their children’s needs and development and are available for you to come in to discuss anything you may need and offer support or practical advice. Every child has a development folder which we fill with photos covering their achievements as well as written evidence covering the EYFS. We also draw together Next Steps, targets for their development over the next few months. You are welcome to look at this development folder whenever you like and we encourage you to contribute to it along to ensure we have a holistic view of your child’s development both at home and at nursery. If your child has additional needs and they have an Individual Education Plan (IEP) which will have targets on it to support your child’s development we will have regular meetings with you to discuss progress made and to catch up on any other appointments that have taken place outside the nursery. We also offer a number of parents’ evenings a year and for children who are aged two we carry out a formal check as close to their second birthday as possible which again looks at their progress in the prime areas of learning – that is Communication and Language, Personal, Social and Emotional Development and Physical Development. We would like to reassure you however that if we had any concerns about your child we wouldn’t wait for any of these reviews, but would talk to you about these concerns immediately.

What support will there be for my child's/young person's overall well being?

Qualified Nursery Nurses are responsible for administering and recording all medicines. If a child needed medication that required specific training (such as an Epipen) we would ensure that sufficient staff had the appropriate training. Staff are regularly updated on children’s medical conditions. For complex medical conditions we draw up a Medical Pathway, an agreement between the nursery and the child’s parents on the procedures to follow if a child becomes ill at nursery. A majority of our staff are first aid trained, and the safeguarding of children is regularly discussed in staff meetings. We also run in house training to update staff on any changes to safeguarding policy, having attended termly cluster meetings run by the local children’s service. We help children with behavioural needs by putting strategies in place to support them, and including them in all activities in an appropriate way. Children may be given a behaviour plan to outline the support we will be giving them and we will discuss and review this along with parents. Before your child starts at nursery, they attend pre-visits. The key person will talk to you about their likes and needs, in order to settle your child into their new environment. We also offer home visits which can be an excellent way to start the relationship between the key person and your child. It is in all our interests to have them happy and settled before they start attending for full sessions.

What specialist services and expertise are avaliable at or accessed by the setting/school/college?

We have links with lots of different specialist services. These include the Area Inco, Portage, Speech and Language specialists and Occupational Health. We have access to members of the Early Years Advisory Team, who can also advise about specialists available to us.

What training have the staff supporting children and young people with SEND had? Are any being trained currently?

We have a nursery SENCo who has completed her SENCo induction training. We have a designated Behaviour Co-ordinator. We have held in-house training in basic Makaton and a number of our staff have attended further Makaton training. Many of our staff have received training on administering Epipens. The nursery has experience of using PECS and choice boards. We have also had experience of using a hoist for a non-mobile child.

How will my child/young person be included in activities outside this classroom including school trips?

>All of our activities are adapted to ensure all of the children will be able to access them in their own way. When going out of the nursery we lower the ratio to ensure we have enough staff to adequately supervise the children and we base this ratio on individual children’s needs to ensure they have enough support to take part in the outing. Where necessary, children are allocated an adult on a one-to-one basis. A risk assessment is carried out prior to any nursery trips to ensure that health & safety is a priority and that we have the correct number of staff to adequately supervise the children.

How accessible is the setting/school/college enviroment?

The nursery is situated in a building which has three floors, although only the ground floor and 1st floor are used by children. The children aged from 2 1⁄4 to 5 years are on the ground floor and the children under 2 1⁄4 years are on the first floor. There is a ramp at the front door for easy access. There is no lift. We have the facilities for nappy changing on both floors and there is a disabled toilet on the ground floor. There are two steps between the main classroom area and the conservatory. There is a handrail, and children who are unable to negotiate these steps by themselves are supported by a nursery adult. Our outdoor play area is spacious, and there is a large tarmac like surface as well as grass and paths. Other than physical restrictions constrained by the building, we are very open to adapting our environment to suit any and all children’s/parents needs where possible.

How will the setting/school/college prepare and support my child/young person to join the setting/school/college or the next stage of education and life?

Our local schools have developed excellent transition programmes for their new starters and we encourage all children to attend the visits with their parents before starting. We work closely with the school/new settings and invite them to come in to see the children in the nursery as well as visiting the children at home with their parents. For children with SEND we would talk to the school to arrange more visits for the child to the new school to ensure the transition is as smooth as possible. We are very happy to accompany the children to these visits as it can really help to make the children feel comfortable and safe. We begin to do school based role play and lots of activities to promote what it will be like in school. We read stories about school life and talk about the transition. We also have a number of transition books showing them photographs of school. We speak to the new school/ provision to give them as much information about your child as possible as well as sending them information about their development and any IEP’s / Next Steps. If your child has an EHCP we will have a transition meeting to get all the professionals working with your child together. The aim of this is to ensure the school or new provision know how best to support them and what they may need to put into place before your child starts with them.

How are the setting's/school's/college's resources allocated and matched to children's/young people's special educational needs?

We have two areas within the nursery and the children are arranged into these rooms based on their ages. If a child needed additional resources we would ensure these resources were in the room for them to access freely. We will work with outside agencies to ensure that all children with SEND needs have the resources required to help them achieve their developmental targets.books, showing them photographs of their new school and the faces of the people who will be caring for them.

How is the decision made about what type and how much support my child/young person will receive?

You, your child’s key person, the SENCo, and the Area InCo, and any other outside agencies involved will discuss what support would be appropriate for your child’s needs. As we have said before, every child is an individual so this will be based solely on your own child’s needs. We will monitor how well the support we have put into place is helping your child and the progress they are making through regular observations, reviewing targets on IEPs and looking at how they are achieving on their developmental milestones. We will have regular meetings with you to discuss their progress. The support will change and develop depending on their progress.

How are parents involved in the setting/school/college? How can I be involved?

We are delighted when parents wish to be involved in aspects of nursery life. We seek volunteers to join our Parent Representative Group, who we communicate to about nursery matters. They are also there for the benefit of other parents who might want some advice or to share their thoughts. We regularly ask parents for updates on their child’s interests so that we can ensure we are providing suitable opportunities to extend their learning. Each child has a learning journal and we share these with parents throughout the year, and ask that they contribute to these too. We hold Parent’s Evenings where carers can take time to talk about their child’s progress and agree what their next steps are. Parents of our older children are invited to the nursery for our Christmas event, as well as our Graduation Ceremony in July. We hold a Forest School each year and are always looking for volunteers to come and help us. We also welcome parents to come and talk to the children about their jobs and hobbies, something which the children always enjoy. We have story sacks which parents can borrow and use at home. We are always striving to work in partnership with our parents and it is something we are continuously trying to develop and encourage.
