How will early years setting/school/college staff support my child/young person?

* If your child has any additional needs their Keyperson and the Nursery SENCo will work together to put an Individual Educational Plan (IEP) in place for them. This will outline their strengths and current level of development. It will set out some clear steps on how we will further their development and how this will be implemented and by who. * We will work with the Area INCo and any other outside agencies involved ensuring we are providing the correct support for your child. * Our SENCo attends regular SENCo Support Group meetings (through our local Services for Young Children department) to ensure we are up to date with any changes and are making the most of any support that can assist your child and family.

How will the curriculum be matched to my child's/young person's needs?

* Whilst we follow the Early Years Foundation Stage Birth to 5 years (EYFS) (DfE, 2012), our main ethos is learning through play. * We plan activities tailored to the children’s individual interests. * We carryout observations of the children’s learning and achievements. * Each child has their own Learning Journey, which shows their individual development and progress. * We complete regular Progress Summaries which gives examples of how your child is developing in the different areas of learning within the EYFS. * For children with additional needs the Keyperson and SENCo complete an Individual Educational Plan (IEP’s)

How will both you and I know how my child/young person is doing and how will you help me to support my child's/young person's learning?

* There are times at the beginning and end of every session to liaise with us about your child’s day. * Your child’s keyperson will complete a daily report sheet, explaining about their day at nursery. * You will be informed when a new Progress Summary has been completed and have the opportunity to take it home along with your child’s Learning Journey. There is a section for you to contribute your aims for future development. * We hold regular parents evenings where you will have the opportunity to talk with your child’s Keyperson about their progress and development. * If at any point you would like to discuss your child’s development or the support being given whilst with us at nursery you can request a meeting with their Keyperson, the SENCo or Nursery Manager.

What support will there be for my child's/young person's overall well being?

* We have policies and procedures in place to protect all children from harm and to develop their overall well being. If you child needs additional support in different areas these will be covered within these. * For example; - If your child needs to have regular prescribed medicines we will follow our administration of medication policy. - If you child needs physiotherapy exercises whilst at nursery this would be covered by our inclusion policy. - If you child has additional behavioural needs we will put into place additional measures to assist their individual needs that are suitable to their age and level of understanding. This is comes under our behaviour policy. - If your child has communication needs we will find ways such as, pictures, photos or Makaton to allow them to communicate their voice and needs. This will come under our inclusion policy.

What specialist services and expertise are avaliable at or accessed by the setting/school/college?

* Our SENCo has received full training through Hampshire Training Providers, regular courses are undertaken to update skills in particular areas such as Visual awareness, Autistic Spectrum Disorder ect. She also has 18 years experience of Early Years settings including children with additional needs. * We liaise with outside agencies to ensure we are providing the best care for each individual child. These include; * Area Inclusion Co-ordinator (INCo * Your child’s Keyperson if they attend another Early Years setting, such as a Pre-school or Childminder * Portage * Advisory Teachers (Hearing and Visual) * Occupational Therapists * Educational Physiologists * Physiotherapists * Speech and Language etc

What training have the staff supporting children and young people with SEND had? Are any being trained currently?

* All of our Keyperson staff hold the minimum of a level 3 Childcare Qualification, with some holding a Foundation Degree and Full Hons Degree in the Early Years. All staff attends regular training to update their knowledge and skills. * Our SENCo has received specific Special Educational Needs training via Hampshire Training Providers, regular courses to update skills in particular area are attended. All training is cascaded down to other staff working with the children. * We work with outside agencies already working with children and their families to ensure individual programs are implemented within the nursery, such as Physiotherapists exercises. * Time is set aside during our regular staff meetings to ensure all staff are aware of any needs children may have.

How will my child/young person be included in activities outside this classroom including school trips?

>As we have a varied environment offering a variety of ways to encourage children’s individual all round development we do not offer trips outside of our nursery. However, we do welcome visitors from our local community into our setting, such as Policeman, local Librarian etc. We ensure that all children attending on these days are included within these visits; if one to one care is needed for this we meet these needs.

How accessible is the setting/school/college enviroment?

* As we are a converted building and have rooms in our upstairs environment our nursery is not fully accessible to wheelchair users. However, we endeavour to include all children and their families within our setting, to enable this we will always work with individual families to try our best to meet their children’s needs. Whether this is putting in additional hand rails, ramps or specialist equipment such as chairs. * For families who English is their second language or do not speak English we will work with the Hampshire Ethnic Minority Traveller Achievement Service (EMTAS) to enable translation and partnership between nursery and home. * For children who English is their second language we liaise with families to find ways to assist them within the setting, such as using photographs or picture routines to assist with their learning and development.

How will the setting/school/college prepare and support my child/young person to join the setting/school/college or the next stage of education and life?

* Prior to starting at our nursery all children are offered a number of settling in sessions. These are purposely made to be flexible in order to fit in with you and your child’s routine and individual needs. During this time you will be able to liaise with your Child’s Keyperson to ensure that any concerns can be dealt with straight away. * When moving age groups your child will again have settling in sessions to their next age group both with and without their current Keyperson. You will have the opportunity to meet with your child’s new Keyperson to discuss the new environment and ask any questions you may have. * When leaving nursery to move on to school or another setting we will provide your child’s new setting with their most recent Progress Summary. We can also arrange transition meetings to enable all information regarding your child and their individual needs to be passed on.

How are the setting's/school's/college's resources allocated and matched to children's/young people's special educational needs?

* The layout of our environment ensures resources and activities are accessible to all children. For children with additional needs we ensure the resources are matched to their individual development through adapting the layout of the nursery. * We are able to use the local Toy Library to borrow resources and equipment. * Depending on the nature of children’s special educational needs or the nurseries needs we are able to apply for various funding which can allow us to source different resources and skills such as, equipment, training or additional staffing.

How is the decision made about what type and how much support my child/young person will receive?

* At your child’s settling in sessions we will be able to assess the amount and type of support your child will need. This will be carried out by our SENCo and your child’s Keyperson. We will liaise with you to gain your views on the amount of support your child receives at home and whether there are any other professionals involved with their care. * When it is recognised that a child has a specific need we will develop an Individual Educational Plan (IEP). This is carried out by the nursery SENCo, through gathering information from yourself, your child’s keyperson and any other professionals involved with your child. This IEP will outline the activities, resources and staff who will be involved; it will set out next steps that will be worked towards. We regularly review children’s IEP to ensure targets are realistic to promote your child’s development and that they are progressing in their development.

How are parents involved in the setting/school/college? How can I be involved?

* The nursery team aims to work with parents as partners in providing quality care for their children; this is achieved in a variety of ways. * We provide daily handovers at the beginning and end of each day. * We hold regular parents evenings for you to discuss your child’s progress with their Keyperson. * We send out regular newsletters informing parents of any changes and upcoming events. * We have two parents’ notice boards, one with important information about the nursery whilst the second has local events and courses and space for parents to display anything they would like to share with other parents. * We hold events to involve parents and carers in the nursery such as, gardening weeks. * Parents are welcome to visit their child at nursery or to phone the nursery as they wish to enquire about their child’s day. * Parents are welcome to visit the nursery and share any skills they have that may run alongside our topic and themes, such as Dentist visits or cooking sessions etc.
