What does your service do?

Parity for Disability provides services and support for people with profound and multiple disabilities. Parity’s educationally-based day services are used by people aged 18+ to continue learning, achieving, making trips out, building relationships and taking part in activities. They are supported by trained, caring staff, employed on a one-to-one basis to provide the essential high level of care and support. Staff address each person’s emotional, learning, physical and social needs. We learn about what’s important to them, building an understanding of each person’s likes, dislikes, interests and issues. Each member of staff uses their knowledge of the individual, their imagination, their own particular strengths, and the resources available to develop activities to suit the student they are supporting. The level of staff ensures that each student can fully participate. Parity for Disability also employs a speech and language therapist, physiotherapist and music therapists. All are qualified and address significant issues including preserving body shape, developing ways of communicating, and overcoming emotional difficulties. They also train staff to implement relevant programmes, such as motor skills exercises for individual students. There is no upper age limit.

Who does your service provide for?

OurContact Alison Cooper at Parity for Disability for an informal chat on 01252 375581 or [mailto:alison@parityfordisability.org.uk alison@parityfordisability.org.uk]. Subsequently we would recommend a visit to the day service. A referral form would then be submitted. If a placement is agreed, there is a locally-organised transition and a three month 'getting to know you' period for both student and Parity staff. Following this, the Individual Programme Plan is set up, with six-monthly internal reviews and annual reviews with the student, families, carers, funders and relevant professionals.

Where is it located and what areas does it cover?

Parity runs a day service in Farnborough, Hampshire as well as two further day services in Camberley and in Mytchett, Surrey. They are used by people from Hampshire, Surrey, Berkshire, and further afield.

How are decisions made about who can use your service?

Day service managers will look at the individual's needs and ensure Parity for Disability can meet the person's requirements within the setting.

How do you communicate with service users and how are they involved in decision making?

Because most of the students have little or no speech, communication is built into all aspects of support. We invest in communication training for the staff, specialist approaches such as Tacpac and intensive interaction, and communication devices. An Individual Programme Plan is developed with the student, families, carers, social workers and relevant professionals. It includes developmental goals in four areas: social skills, academic skills, living skills, and recreational skills. Students are encouraged to make their own choices and express their needs and wishes in all activities, each day that they attend the service.

Is your service fully accessible?

Yes, building entrances and exits, toilets and changing areas are all fully accessible. We take into account the requirements of people using power wheelchairs. Our fleet of minibuses ensures that people are able to go out regularly, either individually or as a group, to local destinations or further afield.

What training are the staff supporting children and young people with SEN and Disabilities had or are having?

In addition to mandatory requirements, day service staff are trained in the following: * Disability awareness * Non-verbal communication, including: - Intensive interaction - Access to augmentative and assistive communication * Developing learning programmes, including: - Addressing basic human needs - Assessing, planning and monitoring - Sensory approach * Specialised sensory training Staff are also encouraged to explore external training opportunities, and have access to Heath & Social Care diplomas.

How will I know my child is safe?

People who want to work at Parity for Disability must show empathy and a positive attitude towards disability during the recruitment process. The DBS check is mandatory. Once employed, there is a six month probationary period. Staff are all trained in safeguarding and whistle-blowing. We have a robust incident and accident procedure. Parity's physiotherapist is able to advise on safe moving and handling. We use our contacts within local authorities to keep up to date with the latest safeguarding information.
