How does the setting/school/college know if children/young people need extra help and what should I do if I think my child/young person may have special educational needs?

At Alverstoke Preschool we firstly build a picture around the child through talking to our parents. The child is given a named key person who will with the parent fill in an all about me form, which details information around the child. The key person will observe the child and monitor any needs the child may haveand will plan relevant next steps to support. The key worker will gather information and record this on our starting points form and this is shared with the parent. Regular discussions with parents enable staff to have overall knowledge and therefore can implement additional support if required.

How will early years setting/school/college staff support my child/young person?

At Alverstoke Preschool we support children with additional needs:

  • Language group
  • Letters and sounds
  • Key group time
  • 1:1 - supporting targeted plans, challenging behaviour, speech and language
  • Emotional support
  • Makaton
  • Visual timetable/ schedules
  • Choiceboards
  • Flashcards
  • Working closely with outside agencies
  • Staff training
  • Behaviour plans
  • Social stories.
How will the curriculum be matched to my child's/young person's needs?

We operate primarily from child led interests during sessions with guidance and enhancements for learning from practitioners and the key person. The whole experience is giving your child an enriched environment taking them on a journey of building confidence, exploration and development. We understand every child is different and work with them at their own pace, making observations and recording this in their personal online record of development. We track each child’s progress using their online line learning journal which ensures coverage of all areas of the EYFS and is a base used for end of school report.

How will both you and I know how my child/young person is doing and how will you help me to support my child's/young person's learning?

Alverstoke Preschool has termly parent’s evenings to discuss your child’s progress and how you can support your child’s development. We also produce child focuswhich are half termly based on observations gathered of on your child, their current development and interests. These are placed upon Tapestry (the online learning journal) to share with parents so the parents can see the development of their child.. The child’s online learning journal is a continuous record of how your child is developing with observations photographs and videos which are cross referenced with the EYFS. IEP's, behaviour plans and health care plans are reviewed at regularlyand your input is welcomed. We provide information on how you can support your child at home and work with all parents in partnership to provide consistent support between home and the setting. On a regular basis when attending the pre-school both the staff and yourself can support your child by encouraging them to self-register each day, assist with where to store packed lunches, coats and other belonging. Our staff are trained in Makaton and we use this to support your child with their communication needs.

What support will there be for my child's/young person's overall well being?

At Alverstoke Preschool staff are on hand prior to the setting being open each day ensuring the day’s equipment and resources are available and fit for purpose, in addition to this there will be focused activities and resources for the days learning programme including number, story and song of the week. All staff are responsible for keeping children safe and secure, your child’s key person is responsible for recording development, although all staff contributes as and when observed. Staff are paediatric first aid trained and staff can administer medicines in accordance with policies and procedures. Further training has been sought to meet additional needs within the setting as children join such as epi pen training. All staff are also DBS checked and level 3 or above child care trained. Staff evaluate their practice and children’s engagement regularly. Information given by families or staff is done through a communication book which is checked throughout each day. The SENCo oversees any individual plans in place in order to ensure appropriate actions are taken to support a child’s needs. No mobile phones are allowed in the play rooms to protect the child’s welfare. We have a child protection officer within the setting who looks after the well-being and safeguarding of our children.

What specialist services and expertise are avaliable at or accessed by the setting/school/college?

Our staff team have ongoing training based around child development. We also have ongoing training cascaded to all staff on child development, speech and language, behaviour management and portage. As a setting we liaise with the area inclusion team, speech and language therapist, specialist advisory teachers, educational psychologists, Portage and health visitors and many more services to be able to provide appropriate support, care and education to all of our children.

What training have the staff supporting children and young people with SEND had? Are any being trained currently?

The SENCo has had relevant training to be able to do the role and keeps up to date with any changes by attending the support groups throughout the year. All staff undergo training to develop their own knowledge and their continual development, this is cascaded down to all practitioners. All practitioners have been trained in Makaton, and safeguarding.

How will my child/young person be included in activities outside this classroom including school trips?

Pre-planned activities off site are fully risk assessed before the trip goes ahead.  Risk asssessments will be altered if we needed to for additional needs. Off site trips / activities are communicated to parent/ carers by newsletters, notice boards, posters, emails and individual letters to parents/carers. When joining the pre-school, consent will be required to allow your child to be able to go off site. All children are included in off site activities and trips and the ratio is one adult to two children. All adults and children are required to wear high visibility jackets and a first aid kit to be taken. Policies and procedure on trips outside the setting are reviewed regularly.

How accessible is the setting/school/college enviroment?

The gates in Alverstoke Infant School are wide enough for buggies and wheelchairs to gain access.

The preschool can offer information to be translated if required, visual timelines are throughout the setting, and staff will contiue to use Makaton when needed.

How will the setting/school/college prepare and support my child/young person to join the setting/school/college or the next stage of education and life?

At Alverstoke Preschool we have, support or provide:

  • Open door policy
  • Settling in visits
  • All about me
  • Starting points

How are the setting's/school's/college's resources allocated and matched to children's/young people's special educational needs?

As an inclusive setting all resources are for all children to use, with adaptions made where possible. We offer lots of support for children who may additional support so we run language groups daily to support those children. Letters and sounds are integrated into key group time so all children can attend these sessions. Children may need Individual Educational Plans to help support them with specific target and these are reviewed regular and led by the key worker. There is additional funding which can be applied for to help support SEND. The SENCo can liaise with outside agencies for support in specialised equipment and support.

How is the decision made about what type and how much support my child/young person will receive?

The Key person and indeed all staff will continually make observations of your child's progress. If any concerns arise from monitoring your child's development then these will be discussed with the parents/carers, the SENCo and /childcare manager. Support will be put into place as soon as it is identified. Targeted plans will be drawn out which have specific targets for the child. These are measured using SMART goals (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant and Timely) - these will be reviewed regular basis. We also carry out two year checks during your child's first term with us, and these are shared with our parents/carers. The SENCo will also liase with outside agencies if more support is needed and will implement strategies discussed.

How are parents involved in the setting/school/college? How can I be involved?

The preschool is managed by a committee of parents and carers, who are elected at the Annual General Meeting which anyone is welcome to attend. The committee welcome new members who wish to get involved and contribute to the preschool. Parent meetings are held each term, two way communication is available via the use of your child’s Tapestry online learning journal, or contact on an informal basis daily, a meeting can be booked if you feel you wish to communicate further than this. The management will be available Mon-Fri.
