- How will early years setting/school/college staff support my child/young person?
At Alton College Nursery each child has a key worker who monitors your child’s progress and tracks this in their individual folders, which are reviewed termly. Each key worker plans for their children around their individual needs and interests. Any concerns regarding your child’s development are always discussed with you first and parental permission is always sought before contacting any outside agencies. Our SENCo’s support staff and liaises with you and any outside agencies involved with your child’s care including the Services for Young Children Area Inclusion Coordinator (InCo). They also attend the SEN support group and coordinates transitions to school. The SENCo’s work closely with your child’s key worker in order to monitor their developmental progress and Individual Educational Plans (IEPs) or behavioural plans are written up in consultation with all who are involved with your child. If needed Personal Education Plans (PEPs) can also be put in place if your child needs it. The amount of support is tailored to fit the individual needs of your child. One to one assistance and small group work can also be arranged. Each child has a portfolio folder compiled by the child’s key worker, this is a written and pictorial record of your child’s development at Nursery in accordance with The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS). The key worker and SENCo work closely with your child to assess your child’s development and implement the next steps to aid their development.
- How will the curriculum be matched to my child's/young person's needs?
Every child is different and the nursery allows them to explore and investigate in a rich learning environment always ensuring their safety. Staff ensure your child’s learning is extended through interaction and progression of activities your child is interested in, at Alton College Nursery we feel this is vital for your child’s overall development. Regular observations of your child are written by all staff and recorded by your child’s key worker in your child’s individual folder. The planning for each day is ‘child led’ and can often be spontaneous, this is so your child’s learning experiences are based around your their interests and your child’s key worker advises on your child’s individual next steps.
- How will both you and I know how my child/young person is doing and how will you help me to support my child's/young person's learning?
Staff are always available to speak to and are happy to discuss your child’s needs. Each child has a folder which contains the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), detailed observations, IEPs and photographs of your child’s time at Nursery. Parents are welcome to come in at the beginning and end of their child’s time at Nursery to discuss any needs or concerns they may have.
- What support will there be for my child's/young person's overall well being?
All staff are responsible for ensuring your child is safe and secure both emotionally and physically during their time at Nursery. All staff are DBS checked and carry out regular safeguarding training, the Nursery has designated safeguarding officers (Barbara Wills & Sue Fry) any disclosures made are dealt with in line with child protection guidelines. A parent quotes ‘Staff and key workers have very positive relationships with all the children’. The Nursery also has numerous policies to ensure your child’s well-being, these include child protection, anti- bullying and special educational needs. The Nursery has students attend on work experience, they are DBS checked and a check list is carried out and signed to ensure they understand our rules and work etiquette, this includes child protection and confidentiality. No student/parent/carer may accompany children (other than their own) to the toilet. The room and garden are checked daily before the children arrive for safety and checks of the toys are continuously carried out to ensure your child’s safety. All staff are trained in First Aid and Epipen administration. All medication is kept in a locked medicine box situated on the kitchen wall. A medicine form is required to be filled out and signed both before and after giving your child any medication. The Nursery uses a camera for Nursery use only (notice board and your child’s folder) and the photographs are not shared. You are asked for consent to this on the registration form
- What specialist services and expertise are available at or accessed by the setting/school/college?
The Nursery has 7 members of staff who have a wealth of experience and are trained from level 3 – 6 in Early Years Child Care and Education. Staff at the Nursery have had basic makaton training which we use with all children through songs and rhymes, through language activities and through general play and snack time. Staff are all trained in First Aid and Child Protection. The manager and SENCo have also attended advanced Child Protection courses and Thomas training for autistic children. The Nursery’s SENCo attends termly network meetings which contain important updates and changes to legislation or new ideas and resources to support children with SEN. Although the Nursery is all on one level it is not appropriate for us to have children in wheelchairs.
- What training have the staff supporting children and young people with SEND had? Are any being trained currently?
Alton College Nursery have 7 members of staff qualified from level 3-6 in Early Years Child Care and Education. The Nursery’s Deputy holds a degree (level 6) in Childhood Studies and Early Years Professional Status. The Nursery’s Manager and SENCo are ‘Thomas’ trained for autistic children and have attended behaviour management training. Three members of staff have attended Makaton training which is used throughout the day at Nursery. All staff are trained in both first aid and child protection. All staff attend and update their qualifications on a regular basis. When training is attended it is shared at staff meetings so all staff can benefit and learn from each other. This allows us to use our knowledge to enhance the children’s learning and ensure their well-being.
- How will my child/young person be included in activities outside this classroom including school trips?
>The Nursery is situated on a college grounds which the Nursery use to extend the children’s learning. The children are invited to take part in physical activities with students in the college, staff accompany the children to the sports hall and help them when necessary to be able to participate in the activities. All areas are accessible for all children. Staff talk to the children about what they are doing and how they should behave, the Nursery have a set of Golden Rules which the children follow which help them remember and understand the Nurseries boundaries.
- How accessible is the setting/school/college environment?
Although the Nursery is on one level it is not appropriate for us to have children in wheelchairs. We are continuously improving the visual and auditory aids in the Nursery depending on the current intake of children. The Nursery has a large outdoor area, there is an undercover area which is accessible at all times no matter what the weather. Out in the garden we have different level slides and climbing frames which the children enjoy and are able to use and challenge themselves. There are different sized tractor tyres dotted around the garden and wooden planks which the children transport and use to make structures. The garden is on one level so easily accessible to all. We have a large mini beast area which the children use to collect and identify bugs and insects. As well as raised beds where we do our planting of vegetables and flowers.
- How will the setting/school/college prepare and support my child/young person to join the setting/school/college or the next stage of education and life?
Parents are invited to visit the Nursery with their child to be shown around and discuss your child’s needs. You will be introduced to staff present on the day and have a chance to speak to them and ask any questions you may have. Following this it is advised that you visit the Nursery as many times as you feel happy with, as it is sometimes harder for the parent to leave the child, or for as many times as the child needs. You can then leave your child for short periods of time to enable them to get used to being left and develop a relationship with staff at the Nursery. If your child gets distressed or upset at any point we will contact you immediately as we do not want your child to feel unhappy. We will work with you to ensure your child’s experience at Nursery is a happy and fun time. We have ‘An All About Me’ questionnaire which gives us an idea of your child’s likes and dislikes before starting Nursery. The Nursery works closely with local schools throughout the year. Teachers are invited in to discuss and observe your child before transitions to school. This gives us a chance to discuss any particular needs your child may have when starting their new school. A transition meeting can be arranged with yourself and all professionals involved in your child’s learning and development to help make your child’s transition to school as easy as possible.
- How are the setting's/school's/college's resources allocated and matched to children's/young people's special educational needs?
All children receive up to 570 hours per funded year of free early years education from the term following their third birthday. The Nursery also includes children who receive two year funding which is accessible to families on low incomes. Additional funding can be claimed for children with special educational needs (SEN), the staff discuss how best to spend this funding in order to benefit the individual child and their needs.
- How is the decision made about what type and how much support my child/young person will receive?
If your child has no diagnosis but you have expressed concerns or your child’s key worker has identified a problem either at their two year check or through observations, then we will have a discussion on how best to support your child when at Nursery and if needs be seek parental permission to involve any outside agencies which may be able to help you and your child. Observations and behaviour records (ABCC) are carried out and shared with you on a regular basis in order for us to keep a record of your child’s development and implement ways to aid your child’s development. Our SENCo will draw up an Individual Educational Plan (IEP) in collaboration with you and your child’s key worker, this is reviewed when needed and when appropriate for your child. Your child will have a folder containing the EYFS, this is continuously updated with written observations however it is monitored and tracked termly to ensure your child is progressing in all seven areas of development. Each child’s tracking is transferred to a large tracking sheet so we can continuously monitor the different areas which we may need to rectify in order to improve the children’s understanding and learning.
- How are parents involved in the setting/school/college? How can I be involved?
Parent Quote ‘ The Nursery has an open door policy and all staff are very friendly and accessible to discuss the children. This can be face to face, by phone or via email.’ The Nursery invites parents in to enrich the children’s learning through reading stories in their home language or playing guitar and song time. Staff are available to attend outside agency meetings with parents to ensure continuity of care of the child and offer support for the parent.
